The Philippine tourism sector held trade roadshows across Bali in Indonesia, as it seeks to double foreign tourist arrivals. The DOT is ramping up its efforts to further ride on the tourism boom that the country has experienced in the past few years. The Philippine Improving Competitiveness in Tourism project (PICTourism), is assisting DOT to improve the competitiveness of the tourism sector through human resource development and improving the quality assurance aspect of tourism accommodations and services.

The Philippines is now one of the new emerging markets which influence the world cuisine according to the Hong Kong-based marketing and communications agency, Catch On. DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr., in welcoming this recognition, said, “As more travelers are starting to choose their travel destinations and plan their itineraries based on the food culture of a place, this is definitely an added boost to Philippine tourism.” One of DOT’s programs, the Philippine Improving Competitiveness in Tourism project (PICTourism), focuses on enhancing the skills of tourism establishments and organizations including those that relate to Culinary and Food &Beverage training. Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary in Davao has been declared the Philippines's ninth ASEAN Heritage Park. The 16,000-hectare mountain is considered a home to highly rare and globally threatened species of plants and animals. Davao is among the pilot areas of the Philippine Improving Competitiveness in Tourism project (PICTourism), which has introduced regulatory impact assessment to reduce regulatory burden in the scuba diving industry in the Philippines. In addition, PICTourism seeks to improve the competitiveness of the tourism sector by assisting DOT in the implementation of the accreditation and quality assurance scheme, as well as strengthening the human resource pool of the industry through skill grants, and addressing issues faced by tourism education.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations recently declared Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary as the Philippines's ninth ASEAN Heritage Park.

International tourists for February rose 20.4 percent to 549,725, the highest in the past 62 months. DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez, Jr. attributed this unprecedented growth through a professional, well-planned, and well-supported tourism industry. Among the programs that the DOT is implementing is the Philippine Improving Competitiveness in Tourism project (PICTourism). The program seeks to improve the competitiveness of the tourism sector by introducing the regulatory impact assessment to reduce regulatory burden, assist DOT in the implementation of the accreditation and quality assurance scheme, and strengthen the human resource pool of the industry through skill grants, and addressing issues faced by tourism education.

The tourism sector turned in a record feat in February as international arrivals registered the biggest growth rate and volume over the past five years.

Ecotourism is recognized as one sector that is poised to be a driver for tourism’s success. In light of this, the Philippines Improving Competitiveness in Tourism (PICTourism) program, a technical assistance project for DOT, administered by the Asian Development Bank and funded by the Government of Canada, is reviewing the current ecotourism standards and regulations. Designed to help improve competitiveness of the country’s tourism sector, this review is being done under PICTourism’s Regulatory Impact Assessments (RIA) output, focused on the review of tourism-related regulations.

A pilot project implemented in Bohol, Cebu, Davao and Palawan, PICTourism aims to enrich our competitiveness in Tourism and make us on par with our ASEAN neighbors.
