Before heading over to the Zambian side of Victoria Falls we stopped at the iconic Victoria Falls Safari Lodge for lunch and the famous vulture feeding experience. Overlooking the waterhole we watched huge numbers of kudu, marabou storks, warthogs and vultures gathering in the African bush. Then came a real and emotional circle of life moment when a mother buffalo and her adorable calf approached the waterhole, only for the calf to suddenly be taken by a crocodile, leaving the mother distressed, and honestly us too. We were so caught up in the moment that we missed part of the vulture feeding talk.

The vultures just kept appearing from every direction, with both Cape Vultures and White Backed Vultures filling the skies. We learned the feeding program helps protect these endangered birds, as poachers have been poisoning vultures in remote areas because their circling often reveals illegally killed wildlife. After the feeding ended, the vultures began circling the fresh kill at the waterhole like a giant black tornado across the sky.

We then caught a taxi to the Victoria Falls Bridge and after stamping out of Zimbabwe we walked across the historic bridge into Zambia. Huge baboons roamed the Zambian side and the elevated views over the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls were incredible. Unfortunately the spray from the falls was so intense that many of the viewpoints were completely covered in mist, and by the time we crossed Knife Edge Bridge we were absolutely drenched.

After heading back into Zimbabwe we finished the evening with dinner and a live performance at the Shearwater Hotel, the perfect way to end a short but unforgettable adventure in Zimbabwe.

Our first full day in Victoria Falls kicked off with an unforgettable adventure. We were picked up early and taken just outside town for an incredible helicopter flight over Victoria Falls. We began by soaring above the dramatic Batoka Gorge, the winding canyon stretching endlessly into the distance. Ahead of us we could see the rising mist from Mosi-Oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders”.

Seeing the world’s longest curtain of falling water, stretching 1.7km wide with an average height of 100m, was absolutely breathtaking. With some of the highest flood levels Victoria Falls has experienced in the past 60 to 70 years, the spray was exploding more than 400m into the air.

After landing we headed to the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls National Park. Starting at the famous Victoria Falls Bridge, we slowly worked our way along the viewpoints, saving the heaviest mist and lowest visibility sections until last, once we were already completely soaked.

In the afternoon we made our way to the Zambezi River above the falls for an all inclusive sunset cruise. Thankfully it only lasted a couple of hours because the temptation of unlimited cocktails was seriously dangerous. Along the river we spotted crocodiles, Marabou storks and plenty of other wildlife before ending the day with a phenomenal African sunset over the Zambezi.

After a long day driving from Elephant Sands in Nata we arrived in Kasane by mid afternoon, giving us just enough time to freshen up before heading out on our Chobe River Safari. Bordering Botswana and Namibia, and close to Zimbabwe and Zambia, we explored the riverside and wetlands of Chobe National Park.

Known for having one of the world’s highest concentrations of elephants, we were quickly convinced it might also have the most hippos too, although that remains unconfirmed. Within minutes we came across several huge hippo families playing in the water, alongside elephants swimming, some with only their tusks visible above the river.

By the riverbank we spotted Nile crocodiles, buffalo, number 4 on our Big 5 list with only the leopard still missing, impala, kudu, giraffes, monitor lizards and countless bird species scattered throughout the wetlands. Another unforgettable highlight was the spectacular African sunset over the Chobe River. A Chobe River Safari is absolutely a must do experience in Botswana!

After spending time with the hippo family we made our way back to camp as the sun set, the glowing colours across the Okavango Delta were absolutely breathtaking. Along the way we spotted even more birdlife and monkeys high in the trees, arriving back at camp just as the sun disappeared beyond the horizon. That night we gathered around the campfire for a traditional singing and dancing ceremony, even joining in ourselves. After midnight we were suddenly awoken by the sounds of hippos grazing right outside our tent.

At sunrise we departed for another jeep safari through the park on the journey back. Along the way we encountered a family herd of elephants as well as several huge solo bulls roaming the delta. The perfect farewell to the world’s largest inland delta and one of Africa’s greatest safari destinations.

After a night in the tourist hub of Maun, including a visit to the famous Okavango Brewery, we finally headed into the Okavango Delta itself, home to the world’s largest inland delta and one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.

The drive through the UNESCO World Heritage listed wilderness was rough, dusty and winding through dense mopane forest. Along the way we spotted elephants, an almost everyday sight in Botswana, home to the largest elephant population on Earth. Birdlife was everywhere too, the delta is home to more than 400 species, including yellow and red hornbills, lilac breasted rollers, kingfishers and tiny bee eaters. After settling into camp we explored the surrounding forest, learning about native plants and bush survival before coming face to face with a solitary bull elephant hidden amongst the trees.

Then came the true highlight of our Okavango adventure, gliding silently through the delta on a traditional Mokoro safari. These iconic local canoes were once carved from tree trunks, but today are made from fibreglass to help protect the fragile ecosystem. Drifting through the crystal clear waterways and untouched wetlands was surreal, but nothing compared to approaching the hippo pool. Echoing across the water came the deep villainous laughter of the hippos, sounding somewhere between Bowser and Jabba the Hutt, as the giant animals surfaced unpredictably around us.

In the distance, the towering 200m cliffs of the Waterberg Plateau rise above the Namibian wilderness, a massive mesa stretching over 60km by 50km. Our campsite sits beneath these dramatic sandstone walls, surrounded by incredible wildlife, from colourful birdlife to the tiny Dik Dik antelope, the smallest antelope species in Africa.

That afternoon we wander up to the historic Rathaus restaurant, a German building constructed on a sacred Ahureru site, carrying the memory of the tragic massacre that once unfolded here during German colonial rule. After cooling off with a swim in the pool, we’re greeted by curious baboons and a family of warthogs before setting off on our next adventure.

We hike through rough spiny bushland to the edge of the plateau and begin scrambling up the rugged cliff face. Reaching the summit just in time, we witness an unforgettable African sunset as the glowing yellow and orange cliffs slowly fade into deep shades of purple looking over the Kalahari. Back at camp, we finish the day with a delicious steak braai, Namibian BBQ, before an unexpected visit from a fearless honey badger.

The sounds throughout the night were absolutely wild! Running on little sleep, we headed out on an early morning Etosha safari adventure that carried on all day long.

We spotted many of the same incredible African wildlife species again, Springbok, zebra, blue wildebeest, and even a rare white rhino. Before lunch we came across a massive gathering of animals around a busy waterhole, along with some endangered black faced impala, including 2 males battling it out for dominance. We also watched the slow, and unsuccessful after half an hour, courtship of 2 giraffes, before being welcomed by a curious hornbill at lunch.

In the afternoon we travelled to the far side of Etosha National Park with rumours of a pride of lions resting beneath a tree, however we sadly missed them. We did get to experience the incredible Etosha salt flats stretching across the heart of the park. Back at camp the wildlife spectacle continued at the waterhole, where a mother and baby rhino arrived for a cool afternoon drink.

We arrived into Namibia’s premier safari destination, Etosha National Park, by mid afternoon, and the wildlife sightings began immediately. Springbok, Zebra, Giraffes and Blue Wildebeest roamed across the plains before we were lucky enough to spot a rare Black Rhino, Namibia is home to the world’s largest population of these endangered giants. Continuing towards camp we found our first Lioness gracefully drinking at a waterhole, followed by a herd of Elephants making their way through the bush.

From camp, the nearby waterhole attracted incredible wildlife activity, with around 20-30 Elephants including playful young calves gathering to drink. Later that evening we witnessed an unforgettable standoff between a White Rhino and Black Rhino. And that was only our very first afternoon and evening in Etosha National Park.
