When the gathering of honey begins in March, the Batak tribe performs a ritual to please the master of bees, Aputa, and his wife, Bayta, the master of rice.

The forest where the masters expressed their abundance is seen as sacred in its form. Batak tunes into the season, hunting and harvesting just enough for the tribe at a certain period where the cycle of nature is currently in. Depleting the land is an act of disrespect to the custodians, who are perceived to be divine entities. With this notion, the tribe believes they are receiving rather than taking.
