Many Palawenyos believe that Palawan is “earthquake-free,” since it lies outside the country’s major fault systems. This belief has given rise to the idea that the island is completely safe from earthquakes. In truth, Palawan is geologically stable, but stability does not mean risk-free. Even regions far from active faults can experience ground movement caused by distant or local seismic activity.
Historical records reveal that Palawan has been shaken several times in the past. The strongest earthquake on record, a magnitude 5.9, struck on 19 December 1940. More recent events include a magnitude 4.7 quake in Bataraza in 2015, a magnitude 5.1 event off Roxas in 2024, and smaller tremors recorded near Coron and Busuanga. These quakes caused no major damage, but they remind us that even a stable island can move beneath our feet.
Palawan’s long coastline also exposes it to tsunamis triggered by distant earthquakes. In 1897, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in the Sulu Sea generated waves up to two meters high, reaching Cuyo and parts of southern Palawan.
While Palawan enjoys a low level of seismic activity compared to other regions, it is not completely earthquake-proof. Understanding its geology and staying prepared through PHIVOLCS updates, earthquake and tsunami drills, and community awareness programs helps ensure safety and resilience for everyone living in this island province.
