DULANG
/ DU-LÁNG / Noun

Long ago, before dining tables and chairs became common in Filipino homes, Ilocano families gathered on the floor, sitting on woven mats called 𝒊𝒌𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒏. They shared their meals together, surrounded by the warmth of family and the simple joys of everyday life. In those moments, food was more than something to eat, it was a way for families to connect, share stories, and strengthen their bonds.

As time passed, the dulang became part of their daily lives.

At first, it was made from bamboo, using simple materials that were readily available in their surroundings.

Eventually, wooden dulang became common, offering a sturdier place where families could gather and share their meals. The dulang was more than just a dining table. It was the heart of an Ilocano home, a place where parents taught their children good manners, respect for elders, discipline, and the importance of sharing. Around it, family members learned to listen to one another, talk about their day, and appreciate the value of being together.

In many ways, the lessons learned around the dulang helped shape the values passed down from one generation to the next.
