Lighthouses are usually named after the places they are built on, but it's the other way around for this gem of a beach in Sorsogon. Parola Beach in Magallanes town, seen in this photo by , is so named because of the lighthouse found atop its hilly shores. This hidden wonder would make the perfect close to a trip to the quaint town known as the site of Ibalon or Ibalong, said to be the first Spanish settlement in the island of Luzon.

But at the same time is forces you to revel only at its descent, at its moment of suspension. Sorsogon is home to several such spectacles, including Busay Falls, seen in this photo by . From Manila, Sorsogon City may be reached by bus from Cubao or Pasay (12 hours) or by plane (one-hour flight and one-hour shuttle) via Legazpi.

On Mondays, the pile of work in front of you for the week seems like a mountain. To remind you of the rewards of climbing that mountain, we're sending you this view from Mt. Pulog (1020 masl) in Sorsogon City's Bacon District, shared with us by . The circular lake at the center is also called Pulog, and is a sight to behold at the end of a four-hour hike. Hikers climbing Mt. Pulog jump off from Barangay Sta. Cruz or San Juan in Bacon, a jeepney ride away from Sorsogon City. If you have time after the climb, we recommend hitting the beaches of Bacon or even Paguriran Island. You may get to Sorsogon City by bus from Cubao or Pasay (12 hours) or by plane via Legazpi (1-hour flight, 1-hour shuttle ride).

There is something romantic about lighthouses. The steadfast watchers revel in isolation, seemingly taking comfort only in the music of waves crashing against the shore. There are two historical lighthouses in Sorsogon: the San Bernardino Island Lighthouse in Bulusan and the Bagatao Island Lighthouse in Magallanes, shown in this photo by . Beyond being romantic spots, these towers play an important role for sea navigators. The Bagatao Island Lighthouse, for instance, marks the entrance to Sorsogon Bay, and helps ships safely maneuver around Ticao Island in Masbate as they head toward the Pacific Ocean.

The City of Sorsogon, the capital of Sorsogon province, is often seen simply as a springboard to beach destinations like Donsol, Gubat, Matnog, or Mount Bulusan and its famed lake. But there is also much to see and do in the only city in Sorsogon. Among the must-try activities is the river cruise along Buhatan River, to which this photo by gives a preview. The trip via the previously overlooked waterway starts at Barangay Buhatan and ends at Sorsogon Bay. If the sunset view it offers is not enough for romance, surely the fireflies that light the riverbanks at night can remedy that. Sorsogon City may be reached by bus, via 12-hour trips from Cubao or Pasay, or by plane, via Legazpi.
