Palalo! Palalo ang estado!

Itigil ang militarisasyon sa probinsya ng Abra!

GOURD HAT 🎩

A Filipino traditional hat can begin as a humble gourd.

National Living Treasure Teofilo Garcia is known for making the tabungaw or kattukong, a traditional Ilocano headwear crafted from a round gourd. More than a simple hat, it is a piece of practical folk art shaped by farming, patience, and inherited skill.

Garcia was born and raised in San Quintin, Abra, where he learned kattukong-making and basket-weaving from his grandfather at 15. His craft begins long before the hat takes shape: he personally grows and harvests the tabungaw, the gourd used as the main material.

The process requires several traditional materials and techniques. The gourd is prepared and shaped into the hat’s main shell, while uway or rattan is split and polished for the inner frame. Nito and bamboo are also woven to accentuate the outer rim, giving the hat both structure and detail.

In 2012, Garcia was conferred the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan, also known as the National Living Treasure Award, in recognition of his excellence and dedication in preserving the kattukong tradition.

What makes the tabungaw special is that it is both beautiful and functional. It reflects the daily life of farmers who needed protection from the sun and rain, while also embodying Ilocano craftsmanship.

Garcia’s work shows that cultural heritage does not only live in museums. Sometimes, it grows in a field, dries under the sun, is shaped by hand, and becomes something people can still wear.

The tabungaw is not just a hat made from a gourd — it is a living Filipino craft passed from one generation to the next.
