At the PTM Conference, this important session explored how Pakistan can balance the protection of its ancient traditions with the evolving demands of modern tourism, while ensuring long-term economic value.

Moderated by Rana Aftab-ur-Rehman, Managing Director - Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), the discussion brought together key stakeholders from across the public and private sectors to examine how cultural assets can be transformed into sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

The panel featured Huzaifa Rehman, Minister of State for National Heritage and Culture; Iqbal Walji, CEO - Travel Walji’s; Syed Qamar Raza, Chairman BoG - Overseas Pakistanis Foundation; Mubarak Hussain, President Hunza Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry and Managing Director Karakoram Explorers Pakistan; and Raja Nazimul Amin, Chairman - Royal Foundation Gilgit Baltistan.

The conversation focused on positioning Pakistan’s rich cultural and archaeological heritage within the global tourism landscape, while also leveraging the role of Overseas Pakistanis as ambassadors and investors. Particular emphasis was placed on community-led tourism models in regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan and Hunza, where local stakeholders are actively driving growth in hospitality and adventure tourism. The importance of ethical tourism practices was also highlighted, ensuring that cultural values are respected and economic benefits reach the grassroots level.

The session reinforced that Pakistan’s greatest strength lies in its people and heritage, and that empowering local communities is key to developing a tourism sector that is authentic, inclusive, and sustainable.
