A United Airlines flight from Newark to Austin was delayed by more than two hours this week after a mechanic was photographed leaning out of the cockpit window and nudging the angle of attack sensor on the side of the aircraft with what looked like a coat hanger.

The flight was United 1928, scheduled to depart Newark Liberty International Airport at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The image was first shared on the United Airlines subreddit by a passenger who witnessed the scene at the gate, and was later picked up by aviation blogger Gary Leff at View from the Wing.

According to View from the Wing, the mechanic in a high-visibility jacket leaned out of the open cockpit side window and used a thin metal object to move the small paddle-shaped sensor on the side of the nose section.

The part is called an angle of attack vane. It measures the angle between the wing and the oncoming airflow, and feeds that data into the flight computers to help prevent stalls. If the vane sticks, freezes, or gets contaminated, it can give the cockpit a faulty reading.

According to View from the Wing, moving the vane by hand while another mechanic watches the cockpit indicators is a legitimate troubleshooting step. It is a quick way to determine whether the sensor is the source of the problem before deciding to recalibrate or replace it. However, it is not something that can be used to sign off the aircraft as airworthy.

That is what happened in this case. United did not dispatch the aircraft. The flight was delayed by about two and a half hours, and the airplane was eventually swapped out for a different jet. Passengers flew to Austin on a different aircraft.

Angle of attack sensors made headlines several years ago during the two Boeing 737 MAX accidents, not because of the sensors themselves, but because the MCAS flight control system was only taking data from one sensor at a time. A single faulty reading was enough to trigger repeated nose-down commands. After the crashes, Boeing redesigned MCAS to compare data from both sensors before acting on it.

Sunday night, March 22, 2026. LaGuardia Airport is already stretched thin. A United Airlines flight has aborted its takeoff after an anti-ice warning light comes on, flight attendants in the back are feeling ill from an unknown odor, and the crew declares an emergency when no gates are immediately available. A Port Authority fire truck, Truck 1, is dispatched to respond.

At the same time, Air Canada Express Flight 8646, a Jazz Aviation Bombardier CRJ-900 operating from Montreal Trudeau International Airport, is on final approach to Runway 4. The lone controller on duty, simultaneously managing both ground and tower operations, clears Truck 1 to cross the runway. Seconds later, as Flight 8646 is landing at between 93 and 105 miles per hour, he realises his mistake. He calls for the truck to stop. Over and over. It is too late.

The CRJ-900 strikes the fire truck on Runway 4. The impact destroys the cockpit and tears open the front fuselage. Both pilots are killed. A Delta flight on approach is sent around. Jazz 646 comes to rest on the runway, its nose elevated, its cockpit gone. LaGuardia closes entirely. 72 passengers and four crew members were on board. 41 people are taken to hospital.

The fire truck had been sent to help one emergency. It became another.
