A viral video by a foreign travel vlogger has led to a major controversy in Hunza, prompting authorities to seal parts of the Luxus Hunza Hotel and impose a fine of Rs 1.5 million over alleged pollution of Attabad Lake.

British vlogger George Buckley posted footage showing a brownish tint in the lake and claimed it was due to untreated sewage being discharged by the hotel. He cited a foul smell and comments from a local resident as further evidence. The video triggered massive backlash online, with calls for strict action.

Following a surprise inspection, Gilgit-Baltistan's Environment Department and Hunza’s deputy commissioner confirmed damaged manholes and issued the fine, along with a warning to upgrade the hotel’s sewage system within a week.

In response, Luxus Hunza denied all allegations, stating the discoloration was caused by natural glacial silt — a common occurrence during summers when turbid mountain streams merge with the lake. The hotel claimed it operates under strict environmental compliance and termed the accusations a "misinterpretation of natural phenomena."

Meanwhile, Buckley pushed back, saying the hotel failed to provide updated EPA reports and that the area around the property smelled strongly of sewage — not glacial runoff.

The incident has sparked fresh debate around environmental responsibility in popular tourist destinations.
