A Mughal Sarai was a rest house or roadside inn built during the Mughal period in India.
“Sarai” means an inn or lodging place for travelers.
Mughal sarais were built along important trade and travel routes.
They provided travelers merchants soldiers and their animals with food water shelter and security.
Many had a large enclosed courtyard rooms around the edges wells and sometimes a mosque.
They were especially important for the Mughal Empire’s trade communication and postal system.
