Nirmal Purja Among 10 Missing Following Broad Peak Avalanche
A major search and rescue effort is underway on Pakistan’s Broad Peak (8,047m) after a high-altitude avalanche swept the upper routes on Thursday, cutting off all communication with a 10-member international team led by world-famous mountaineer Nirmal "Nims" Purja.
The missing group—which includes five Nepali climbers, local guide Sohail Sakhi, and international clients from the US, Oman, and China—remains unaccounted for as Pakistani military and expedition operators coordinate emergency helicopter search operations.
The mountaineering community is holding onto hope after reports that a 10-member international expedition led by world-renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja has gone missing on Pakistan’s Broad Peak following a massive avalanche.
According to Pakistani authorities, the avalanche struck around midday on Thursday, leaving the team out of communication. Broad Peak, standing at 8,047 metres in the Karakoram Range, is the world’s 12th-highest mountain and is known for its extreme conditions and objective hazards.
The missing team reportedly includes expedition leader Nirmal Purja, five Nepali climbers, one American, one Chinese, and one Omani mountaineer.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan has confirmed that it is working closely with government authorities to coordinate search and rescue efforts. Due to severe weather conditions, rescue operations have been delayed, but emergency helicopters and rescue teams are on standby and will be deployed as soon as the weather permits.
