The Advantages of Central Heating Systems
By Horacio Garcia, eHow Contributor
A central heating system is an economical way to heat the home.
Today's preferred method of heating a home is with a central heating system. Seven types of central heating systems exist for the home or business. Water circulation, steam boilers, heat pumps, forced air furnace, solar heating, electric resistance and the biomass system all provide heat to the system. Buildings with a central heating system have advantages over buildings not using this type of system.
Efficient
A central heating system works more efficiently than any other method of home heating. Heating a home with hot air, such as with fireplaces or baseboard heaters, does not provide the amount of energy as a water-fed system. Water provides four times the energy as air making warming each room more efficient. Warming the air that runs throughout the building or home with water allows a more even temperature in every room.
Central Location
Generating the heat in one location prevents damage from occurring throughout the house. Creating the heat in one location, then sending that heat to each room through ducts is the way a central heating system works. A central location allows the entire house or building to heat more quickly because all rooms are getting heat simultaneously. The furnace or boiler is easier to locate when problems arise. A central heating system is safer because the production unit is in one room, such as the utility room or mechanical room.
Controls
Controlling the central heating system is also easier with a programmable thermostat. The use of a thermostat allows regulation of the temperature throughout the building. A room not in use can have the heating system turned off. The system will shut down when the house reaches the desired temperature with a thermostat controlling the heating system. The thermostat is set at a certain temperature and as each room heats up, the thermostat monitors the progress shutting down once the programmed temperature is reached.
Economical
Even though the initial cost of a central heating system is expensive, the long-term savings recovers the cost for the homeowner. Since the system is not running at all times, energy costs go down. A heating system controls itself when programmed properly. Heated water remains warm for a long time because of the pipes in which the water runs through the system is small and can heat back up quicker using less energy.
Heating Sources
A central heating system gives the owner different options when it comes to the type of heating source. The system can run on gas, electric energy, solar power or other heating sources. The system also allows a combination of heating distribution systems. A heating system can circulate warm air throughout the home when installation is done properly. Circulating air provides a way for the heat to return back to heating system. A circulation system allows the heat sources to work more effectively.
