Taxila Museum is one of Pakistan’s most important archaeological museums, located in Taxila, Punjab, near the UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites of ancient Gandhara. Established during the British era, its foundation stone was laid in 1918 and the museum was formally opened in 1928 to preserve and display discoveries made from systematic excavations led by Sir John Marshall. The museum houses thousands of authentic artifacts dating from around 600 BCE to 500 CE, including world renowned Gandharan art, stone and stucco sculptures of the Buddha, architectural fragments from monasteries and stupas, ancient coins of Indo-Greek and Kushan rulers, inscriptions in Kharosthi and Sanskrit, pottery, jewelry, tools, and everyday objects that reflect the religious, cultural, educational, and commercial life of ancient Taxila, once a major center of learning and trade in South Asia. Today, Taxila Museum stands as a fully authentic and academically recognized institution that connects visitors directly to the complete historical journey of Gandhara civilization, from Achaemenid and Greek influence to Buddhist heritage, with all collections preserved under professional archaeological standards.
