Shimshal valley has its largest adventure area in Hunza and is a major attraction for tourists. Its mountains like Destaghil Sar (7,885m), Shimshal White Horn( 6,3030m) Minglik Sar(6,150m), Lupghar Sar,Yazghail Sar, Kunjut Sar and others are well known among mountaineers. Gigantic glaciers include Malangudhi, Yazghail, Khurdopin, Braldu, Odver, Ver Zharav, and main passes are Chafchingoal, Khurdopin, Mai Dur, Braldu, Boi Sam and others. Shimshalis are to Pakistan as Sherpas are to Nepal. More than twenty well known mountaineers from this valley made Pakistan proud in the field of tourism. Some people call it " The Valley of Mountaineers". Some of them are Rajab Shah, Mehrban Shah, Shambi Khan,Aziz Ullah, Qudrat Ali, Sarwar Ali, Shaheen Baig, Amr-uddin- Shah, Amin Ullah Baig, Sajjad Karim, Aziz Baig, Qurban Muhammad, Tafat Shah, Farhad Khan, Wahab Ali Shah, Fazl Ali, Hasil Shah, Subidar(retired).Yousaf Khan, Havaldar(retired).Muhammad Ullah, Ezat Ullah, Muhammad Bari,and others. Rajab Shah has distinction of scaling all five peaks more than eight thousand meters located in Pakistan. The Shimshal Mountain Guides team, under the leadership of legendary mountaineer Abdul Joshi, is officially on the move toward their mission – Summit for Climate Change.

With a shared vision to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on our high-altitude regions, the team is now heading toward Tirich Mir (7,708m) — the highest peak of the Hindu Kush.

🏔️ Lukpe La Pass – A Hidden Gateway of the Karakoram
Lukpe La Pass is a high and remote glaciated mountain pass in the Karakoram range, connecting Shimshal Valley to Snow Lake and the Biyafo Glacier. Known for its harsh weather, deep crevasses, and technical terrain, it is one of the least-traveled routes in the region, requiring strong alpine skills and route-finding expertise.

🧭 Abdul Joshi’s Crossings of Lukpe La
Renowned mountaineer Abdul Joshi has successfully crossed Lukpe La Pass four times, leading various expeditions through this challenging route:

2007 – Joshi made his first successful crossing of Lukpe La with Qudrat Ali (a fellow Pakistani climber) and Jeff Houben (a Belgian mountaineer). This marked the beginning of his legacy of reviving forgotten Karakoram routes.

2010 – He crossed again with Dr. Ehsan and a larger Pakistani expedition team, further demonstrating the pass’s potential as an alpine challenge and training ground for local climbers.

2013 – Alongside climber Nayar, Joshi led another successful crossing, solidifying his mastery over the region’s complex glacier systems.

2017 (Winter) – In a rare and bold move, Joshi and his team crossed Lukpe La in winter conditions, enduring sub-zero temperatures, deep snow, and unstable ice — a testament to their resilience and alpine skill.

🌟 Significance
These multiple crossings helped put Lukpe La back on the map for modern alpinists and earned Joshi the title of a “Pathfinder of Karakoram.” His efforts have inspired a new generation of Pakistani mountaineers to explore and document these forgotten high-altitude corridors.
