Laura Dahlmeier of Germany, a seven-time world champion and a two-time Olympic gold medallist in Biathlon has been tragically declared dead while descending from 6049m Laila Peak. Laura and her climbing partner Krauss were descending from Laila Peak on Monday while they were hit by rock fall triggered by a rope maneuvre. Laura’s body rested motionless at the same spot where she was hit while the authorities scrambled to spearhead a rescue operation including Pakistani Military helicopters. The weather conditions and constant rock fall however thwarted all rescue attempts. Based on the helicopter pilots’ observations she probably died instantly during the rock fall. The aggrieved family has already made it clear that no attempts shall be made to retrieve her body and to risk anymore lives.
‘It was Laura’s written will that, in a case like this, no one should risk their lives to rescue her. Her wish in such a case was for her body to be left on the mountain. Her relatives also asked to respect Laura’s last wish’, a notification stated.
Laura Dahlmeier was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and was among the best female biathletes of all time. In 2019, at age 25, she quit professional sport and focused on alpinism and ski touring, although she kept following biathlon races and was a commentator on the sport for German television.
The 6096m Laila Peak is one of the most stunning spires in the Baltoro/Hushe region and is often chosen by skiers to hone their skills from around the world. Its northwest face presents a challenging slope of 45 degrees, spanning over 1500 vertical meters.
RIP Laura!
