Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam inaugurated an environment friendly e-taxi for northern areas of the country.

Addressing the launching ceremony of the first ever electric vehicles being introduced as taxis in the hilly terrain of northern areas through a joint venture between Sapphire Group and Faisal Movers, he said: “I congratulate Sapphire Group and Faisal Movers for their joint initiative as they are embracing the future in the field of advanced mobility and sustainable growth.”

The joint venture aimed to reduce the country’s carbon footprint through implementation of a strong de-carbonisation action plan that would help preserve the natural environment of northern areas, especially Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

He said GB had massive potential for tourism but was equally vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

“We have the responsibility to protect its environment as fuel based vehicular emissions are detrimental for the local environment and ecology. GB is generating a major chunk of our tourism, so we cannot pollute it,” he added.

He said the e-taxi would start from the federal capital to Murree and Nathiagali whereas its powerful engine and battery capacity could also let the vehicle venture into hilly areas.

Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan Matsuda Kuninori said that Tokyo had eased travel restrictions to Pakistan and he personally considered Pakistan a safe country. He said he would encourage Japanese people to visit this country for tourism and exploring business opportunities.

He said Pakistan has rich potential in the tourism sector and it can easily become the hub of foreign tourists keeping in view its ancient history, Gandhara civilization and natural landscape.

He added: “After visiting this place, I would recommend this important Buddhist site in Shah Allah Ditta to the Japanese people to visit as this is the area from where Buddhist civilisation reached Japan. The foundation of Japan-Pakistan friendship was in fact laid down centuries ago,” the ambassador said. Moving up the mountain from the caves, the Ambassador also visited the historic Alexander’s well.

He was amazed at seeing this drinking water facility at the top of the Margalla hills established in ancient times. The place is believed to have been used as a route from Kabul to the Gandhara city of Taxila by Alexander the Great.
