Step back in time and discover how people lived in the villages of Warmia, Masuria, and Powiśle from the 18th to 20th centuries.

This two-hour journey takes you to the Museum of Folk Architecture in Olsztynek — one of Poland's largest open-air museums (skansen). We'll travel together by train from Olsztyn (tickets purchased separately), then walk through a living village frozen in time.

Explore authentic wooden cottages, farmsteads, barns, and windmills relocated from across the region. Each building tells a story: how families cooked, slept, and survived through harsh winters; what tools they used; how they celebrated; and what traditions shaped daily life in rural Warmia and Masuria.

You'll see:
– Traditional thatched-roof cottages from different ethnic communities
– Working mills and blacksmith workshops
– Original interiors with period furniture and household items
– The evolution of rural architecture across three centuries
– Regional differences between Warmian, Masurian, and Powiśle building styles

This isn't a museum behind glass — it's a village you can walk through, touch the wooden walls, and imagine the lives lived within them.

Between 1516 and 1521, Nicolaus Copernicus lived in this castle as administrator of the Warmian Chapter's estates. His astronomical observations here became the foundation for "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" — the 1543 book that stopped the Sun and moved the Earth. But the story of the Warmian Chapter Castle extends far beyond one astronomer.

This one-hour tour takes you through 6 exhibitions that reveal layers of history, art, and everyday life in Warmia and Masuria:

Nicolaus Copernicus: Resident of Olsztyn Castle — discover how the astronomer lived and worked here, see his astronomical observation tablet (the oldest known use of gnomic reflection), and view the only surviving book from his personal library: a medical incunabulum from 1485.

Difficult Beginnings: The Masurian Museum 1945-1950 — witness how the museum rose from the ruins after WWII, when the castle stood with shattered windows and debris-filled halls, as Hieronim Skurpski and his small team raced to rescue Gothic sculptures, altar wings, and regional treasures.

From the Folk Herbal — explore how plants and herbs shaped daily life in Warmia and Masuria, from kitchen remedies to healing traditions and symbolic meanings woven into local beliefs.

Period Interiors: From Baroque to Art Nouveau — step through four centuries of domestic life, from a Baroque chamber (17th-18th century) to a Biedermeier parlor (1815-1850), Second Empire study (1852-1870), and Art Nouveau salon (turn of 20th century).

In 1920, a plebiscite was held in Olsztyn. 97.8% of residents voted to remain part of the Weimar Republic.
What actually happened in this city — and how it eventually became Polish — is what this route reveals. As the Polish saying goes: "We never returned here, we simply came." / My tutaj nie wrócili, myśmy przyszli.

In two and a half hours, we explore different chapters of Olsztyn's history: from the Prussian Regency building, which became the most terrifying place during N**i rule, but after the war became the railway workers' headquarters — we'll walk along January 22nd Street (the name of the street is still debated to this day) — past Adam Mickiewicz Street all the way to Polish Consulate Square, Jaracz Theatre, and finish in the Old Town at the castle courtyard, where it all began back in 1353.

This route reveals how one city carries two identities — Allenstein and Olsztyn — and shows you what that duality left behind in the stones.

An extended 2-hour city route for those who want more than "a pretty old town you can see in 10 minutes" and are curious about how the capital of Warmia actually lives. In two hours, you'll see the city not just from the postcard angles, but from the residents' perspective: St. James Church from the inside, St. Barbara Street and Mendelssohn House, Olsztyn's shortest street, the city miniature model by the library, the High Gate, and the Town Hall with Olsztyn's hejnał (bugle call). We'll walk past the Awangarda cinema (one of the oldest in Poland) that's still operating. We'll visit Marshal Piłsudski Avenue and the start of the most beautiful early 20th-century street — Dąbrowszczaków Street. Then we return to Slavic Unity Square, finishing at Fish Market Square — where in 1886, the first Polish-language newspaper in a Prussian city was published.

This is a great choice if you want more than a first introduction — you'll get the feeling: "I actually know this city a bit."

Hello from & in Poland, my name is Aleks. For the past two years — since 2024 — I’ve been a licensed English-speaking tour guide here in Olsztyn, Warmia & Masuria. My license covers the entire region.

I invite you to explore my city — Olsztyn — and the whole region beyond it. FYI, the voivodeship is the fourth largest in Poland by area. So many places to discover!

New 2026 season starts on May 1st.

Most people think Olsztyn is just a short walk. You come in through the Upper Gate, stop for a coffee, walk through the Old Town, and that’s it — ten minutes, done. Nuh.

But it’s not like that.

Even the Old Town alone — if you don’t rush and actually look around — can easily take more than two hours. And there is so much more: the castle above the river, the districts beyond the Upper Gate, Dąbrowszczaków Street, and many places that visitors usually miss.

And just 20 minutes on foot from the center, you’ll find Lake Ukiel — Olsztyn’s largest lake. Once you go beyond Olsztyn, an even richer region opens up in front of you: lakes, medieval castles, forests, and towns shaped by many layers of history.
