"Ladies and gentlemen, on June 4, 1989, communism ended in Poland." With these words, spoken on October 28 of the same year, actress Joanna Szczepkowska announced the end of communism in Poland. The symbol of this fall was the Niespodzianka café, located on Plac Konstytucji in Warsaw, which, incidentally, opened on the day the Polish People's Republic was born, July 22, 1952.

On December 7, 1970, W***y Brandt, visiting Warsaw, came to the former Warsaw Ghetto to lay a wreath at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes. After adjusting the ribbon on the wreath, he unexpectedly knelt down in front of the monument, bowing his head, clasping his hands together, and remained there for a moment in contemplation.

Today, participants of the Warsaw Historic Centre tour wore symbolic daffodils pinned to their clothes. Why? The daffodil has become a meaningful emblem linked to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It refers to the gesture of Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the Jewish Combat Organization, who every year on April 19th laid yellow flowers—often daffodils—at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes. He did so quietly, without speeches or ceremonies, simply to remember.

Over time, this act inspired a broader tradition. The daffodil, blooming in spring and resembling the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear during the war, came to represent memory, solidarity, and resistance. Today, wearing a paper daffodil is a way to honor the courage of those who fought in the uprising and to keep their story alive.

Today is the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Exactly 82 years ago, on April 19, 1943, on the eve of the Jewish holiday Passover (which symbolizes the breakout of the Jewish people from Egyptian slavery), German forces entered the Jewish district to finally liquidate it. Surprised, they met resistance from those who still lived in the ghetto - several hundred, mostly young, lonely people who had lost almost everything by then. The first uprising in occupied Warsaw began. At the same time, it was the first urban revolt in Europe, conquered by the Germans.
