🦒 The Giraffe on Safari – The Graceful Queen of the Savannah
The giraffe is one of the most majestic and recognizable animals in Africa. With its long legs, distinctive neck, and gentle gaze, encountering a giraffe on safari is an unforgettable experience for both children and adults.
🔎 Fun facts about giraffes:
The tallest land animal in the world – adult giraffes can reach up to 5.5–6 meters (18–20 feet) tall!
Long neck, but only 7 vertebrae – just like humans, but significantly elongated.
A tongue like rubber – giraffes have a dark, prehensile tongue up to 50 cm (20 inches) long, which they skillfully wrap around thorny acacia leaves.
A heart the size of a watermelon – it has to pump blood all the way to the head! A giraffe’s heart weighs about 11 kg (24 lbs) and is exceptionally strong.
Very short sleepers – giraffes sleep only 10–30 minutes per day, in short naps!
They communicate using infrasound – although they seem silent, giraffes produce sounds below the human hearing range to communicate.
📍 Where can you see giraffes on safari?
Giraffes inhabit the savannahs, open woodlands, and semi-arid regions of Africa – from Kenya and Tanzania to Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. They’re often visible from a distance – towering over the trees, calmly munching leaves in their slow, peaceful rhythm.
🏡 Where can you feed giraffes in Kenya?
If you're dreaming of an even closer encounter with giraffes – the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi is the perfect place!
This sanctuary for endangered Rothschild’s giraffes allows visitors to hand-feed giraffes, or even feed them “kisses” from their lips! The giraffes are friendly, used to humans, and incredibly photogenic. Nearby, you’ll also find the famous Giraffe Manor – a luxury hotel where giraffes poke their heads through the windows at breakfast.
Watching giraffes in the wild is a true lesson in harmony and grace. And at the Giraffe Centre, you can not only see them up close, but also support giraffe conservation.
