Joe showed up ready. We showed up with our kayaks ready to go, a net, and the official “Help us Heal Veterans “policy.
Joseph Fridley served with the 595th Maintenance Company in Korea. After the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami he helped move equipment by rail to Busan, load it onto a ship, and then keep that gear running 24/7 in Indonesia while relief work was still underway. That is a serious day job. Today’s assignment was lighter: sit in a kayak, annoy fish, and let Southwest Florida do the rest.
The rod bent. The straw hat stayed on. A small but highly motivated fish made a brief appearance for the camera and then returned to its regularly scheduled programming. Mangroves in the background, blue sky overhead, and one veteran reminding the water who used to move freight for a living.
These trips do not happen on good intentions alone. Thank you to our anonymous donors. You stay off the captions and out of the photos, and that is exactly how you wanted it. Because of you, veterans get on the water at no cost. We notice. Joe noticed. The next veteran will notice too.
