Un día como hoy, 12 de agosto de 1898, se dio la Batalla del Asomante en las montañas del municipio de Aibonito en el archipiélago de Puerto Rico! Luego del 25/julio/1898, los soldados norteamericanos comenzaron a desplazarse por el sur para poder llegar a San Juan, estos, dirigidos por el capitán R.D. Potts, se enfrentan a los soldados españoles y voluntarios puertorriqueños en las montañas del Asomante en Aibonito. Dispuestos a dar la batalla por el control, los españoles abrieron fuego contra los soldados norteamericanos. Sin embargo, ese mismo día en la noche, se recibe un comunicado (telegrama) de Washintong D.C. para poner fin a toda actividad relacionada a guerra que allí estuviera ocurriendo. Días más tarde, el 24 de septiembre de 1898 en municipio de Aibonito bajó bandera española y es ocupado y dirigido por el ejército estadounidense. Y ya para el 10 de diciembre de 1898 se firma el Tratado de París y finaliza la Guerra Hispanoamericana. Aibonito fue la última trinchera de resistencia frente las fuerzas militares invasoras de los Estados Unidos.
