Entrance to El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico may no longer be free. That’s right, U.S. National Park Service has proposed a $4 entrance fee per person to enter the main recreational area of El Yunque Rainforest. Additionally, it proposes a $20 individual annual pass and a $30 family annual pass for up to 4 people. This proposal would also decrease the fee to enter El Portal Visitor Center from $8 to $4 and add a three day pass and an annual passes for individuals and families.

The Park Service says that this fee is necessary for the long-term conservation and maintenance of the recreational areas and trails of the rainforest, but some argue that it poses a barrier that would exclude many local families from accessing this rich natural resource.

An entrance fee to El Yunque is not unprecedented. During the COVID epidemic the Park Service introduced the same $4 entrance fee with a reservation system to control the crowds accessing the rainforest, but it was later removed.

The current proposal is being reviewed and scrutinized by local government leaders looking to exempt Puerto Rico local from paying this fee, but doing so will be tricky as it would require the approval of Congress and the US President.

In December I had my first tour of Old San Juan!

I’ve been lost for a while, I’ve been working on something that I should have done a long long time ago: getting certified as a tour guide in Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷

I started this process a couple of years ago, but for one reason or another I had not finished it until now!
