The Camuy Cave Park will reopen by the end of 2026.

That’s right, one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic natural attractions is set to partially reopen before the end of the year.

The Camuy Cave Park contains the Camuy River, the third-largest subterranean river in the world. It also contains the largest cave systems in the Western Hemisphere, composed of over 220 cavities and caverns which were created by the river over millions of years.

The park had originally closed due to damanges caused by Hurricane María in 2017, reopening briefly in 2023 before closing again shortly after.

This year’s partial reopening includes access to the Cueva Clara, a 200 feet high chamber where you will see the largest stalagmite in Puerto Rico. It also includes access to the Sumidero de Empalme an impressive 419 feet deep sinkhole through which the Camuy River passes.

The park will also implement a new online reservation system and an increased entrance fee, likely to be $18 per person. However, there will be different prices for residents and tourists.

According to the Natural Resources Department, future phases of the park’s development include more attractions such as a rock climbing walls, extreme tours, a restaurant, camping, glamping, and an eco-lodge.

The Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Has Lost Its Glow

That’s right, what has been long considered to be the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, has seen its glow steadily decline since July, dropping to zero in September.

There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them: the Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Laguna Grande in Fajardo, and La Parguera in Lajas.

In these bays, microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates grow in numbers large enough to produce a vibrant glow caused by a chemical reaction inside of them when the water is distrubed.

Scientist say that a period of decreased bioluminescence is normal during this time of year because of seasonal rainfall and hurricanes. However, they also point out that this is the worst decline since 2018. Though the cause of this blackout is still unknown, scientist are considering the drought brought on by El Niño, recent heavy rainfall, large amounts of sargassum in the bay or high tides as potential factors.

This is not the first time that the Vieques Bio Bay has gone dark. In 2014 the bay lost its glow because of a cooler than normal climate and changing underwater currents, and in 2018 due to the passing of Hurricane María.

Despite the facts that in both of these occasions the bio bay’s glow came back, scientists, residents and local businesses are worried about the current state of the bay because many consider it to be Vieques most important touristic attraction.

So, should you reconsider visiting Vieques during your trip to Puerto Rico? Absolutely not. In Vieques you’ll find some of Puerto Rico’s most beautiful secluded beaches, a distinctly unique Caribbean culture influenced by the nearby lesser Antilles and a rich history going all the way back to 2300 BC.

Entrance to El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico may no longer be free. That’s right, U.S. National Park Service has proposed a $4 entrance fee per person to enter the main recreational area of El Yunque Rainforest. Additionally, it proposes a $20 individual annual pass and a $30 family annual pass for up to 4 people. This proposal would also decrease the fee to enter El Portal Visitor Center from $8 to $4 and add a three day pass and an annual passes for individuals and families.

The Park Service says that this fee is necessary for the long-term conservation and maintenance of the recreational areas and trails of the rainforest, but some argue that it poses a barrier that would exclude many local families from accessing this rich natural resource.

An entrance fee to El Yunque is not unprecedented. During the COVID epidemic the Park Service introduced the same $4 entrance fee with a reservation system to control the crowds accessing the rainforest, but it was later removed.

The current proposal is being reviewed and scrutinized by local government leaders looking to exempt Puerto Rico local from paying this fee, but doing so will be tricky as it would require the approval of Congress and the US President.

I’ve been lost for a while, I’ve been working on something that I should have done a long long time ago: getting certified as a tour guide in Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷

I started this process a couple of years ago, but for one reason or another I had not finished it until now!
