This year again, on 6th and 7th May, the celebrations for the feast-day of the Finding of the Cross of Christ took place in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The heart of the solemnity is the chapel of St Helena, in the ancient stone quarry on the lower level of the Basilica, where the inventio (“finding”) of the Holy Cross by the mother of the Emperor Constantine in 326, is remembered.
Jerusalem is the only place in the world where this feast-day is still celebrated, as Pope John XXIII eliminated it from the Roman calendar in 1960, in favour of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross on 14th September. The date chosen for the commemoration is 7th May because it was mentioned by St Cyril of Jerusalem, who told of a huge luminous cross that appeared in the sky, above Mount Golgotha, extending as far as the Mount of Olives.
Anche quest'anno, il 6 e 7 maggio, si sono tenute le celebrazioni per la festa del ritrovamento della Croce di Cristo nella Basilica del Santo Sepolcro. Il cuore della solennità è la ca****la di Santa Elena, nella antica cava di pietra al livello inferiore della Basilica, dove viene ricordata l'inventio ("ritrovamento") della Santa Croce da parte della madre dell'imperatore Costantino nel 326.
Gerusalemme è l'unico luogo al mondo dove questa festività è ancora celebrata, poiché papa Giovanni XXIII l'ha eliminata dal calendario romano nel 1960, in favore della Festa dell'Esaltazione della Croce il 14 settembre. La data scelta per la commemorazione è il 7 maggio perché è stata menzionata da San Cirillo di Gerusalemme, che ha parlato di una enorme croce luminosa apparsa nel cielo sopra il Monte Golgota, che si estendeva fino al Monte degli Ulivi.
