I have a new tour: the Lisbon Lives Running Tour! Starting 7am Sunday morning at the Miradouro de Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, we visit the most beautiful & historical neighbourhoods of the city, with commentary on the way, and see the city without cars or tourists! It's an exhilarating way to start a Sunday! Total distance 8.1km.

Lisbon is a great base for exploring the less well- known regions of Portugal. It's only a couple of hours by car/bus/train for example, to the Serra de Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, fantastic for walking, and even skiing in the winter.

If you have seen the main sights in Lisbon you should explore some of the less touristy areas. One of my favourite areas is Campo de Ourique. It's a quiet leafy area not far from the centre with good cafés, restaurants, bookshops & a traditional covered market. Here, the Jardim da Parada, with it's centenarian tropical trees and duck pond - the perfect spot to hang out in the café or read a book.

On the street art tour yesterday with Sandra & Isabelle from France. Lots of exciting new works on the walls, plus a surprise: an impromptu Fado concert in the street by Miguel, just for us!

One of my most popular tours is the "Secret Lisbon Walking Tour". I'm one of very few people offering such a tour, and you will see things even the locals don't know about: secret doors and passages, medieval crypts and cemeteries, stories of spies and freemasons, an old Roman well, a Moorish-style palace, and much, much more! Like all my other tours, it is the fruit of months of careful research and design. If you're coming to , contact me directly for an instant discount!

Five useful tips for visiting Lisbon from Business Insider below. I would add:
6. Book a Fado show before you come - seeing the Fado is a unique and powerful experience but visitors often find that when they arrive everything has sold out.
7. Buy local - use small family-run local restaurants ("tascas") rather than chains and buy locally-produced souvenirs to get quality at good prices and support the local economy.

And of course...
8. Get a good local tour guide who will help you to make sense of the city in a short time, saving you lots of time and enriching your experience of the city.

As a local tour guide, I see tourists and first-time visitors to Lisbon and greater Portugal make common mistakes around tipping and packing.
