🇬🇧 If there are places in the world that defy imagination, the Azores are among them. 🌋

On Faial Island, the Capelinhos Volcano tells a story that begins on the ocean floor. Between September 1957 and October 1958, over the course of 13 months, a submarine eruption boiled to the surface, hurled ash more than 1,400 metres into the air and added new land to the island.

The nearby lighthouse was almost entirely buried. The landscape that remains is arid, black and lunar, utterly unlike the lush green Azores, and can now be explored on foot, with the Volcano Interpretation Centre built underground so as not to disturb the landscape nature created.

On Terceira Island, the Algar do Carvão is a 90-metre-deep volcanic chimney formed some 3,200 years ago, descended on foot via a staircase into its interior. Inside, the silence is absolute. The walls are draped in vegetation and minerals. And light enters only from above, through the open crater to the sky.

🇵🇹 Se há lugares no mundo que desafiam a imaginação, os Açores, são um deles. 🌋

Na Ilha do Faial, o Vulcão dos Capelinhos conta uma história que começa no fundo do mar. Entre setembro de 1957 e outubro de 1958, durante 13 meses, uma erupção submarina ferveu à superfície, lançou cinzas a mais de 1400 metros de altura e acrescentou território à ilha.

O farol que ali existia ficou quase soterrado. A paisagem que restou é árida, negra, lunar - completamente diferente do verde exuberante dos Açores - e hoje pode ser explorada a pé, com o Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão enterrado no solo para não interferir com a paisagem que a natureza criou.

Na Ilha Terceira, o Algar do Carvão é uma chaminé vulcânica de 90 metros de profundidade, formada há cerca de 3200 anos, que se desce a pé por uma escadaria até ao seu interior. Lá dentro, o silêncio é absoluto. As paredes são cobertas de vegetação e minerais. E a luz entra só por cima, pelo cratér aberto para o céu.

🇬🇧 Thirty minutes from Lisbon, the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park is one of Portugal‘s most diverse and surprising protected areas.

🥾 On a single route, you can walk through dense cork oak and stone pine forest, emerge onto clifftop viewpoints above the Atlantic, descend to vertiginous coastal cliffs and pass through villages where time seems to have slowed to a standstill.

🌄 The trails vary in length and difficulty: from gentle coastal walks along the Guincho shoreline to more demanding routes through the Serra, passing Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point of continental Europe - with views stretching to Lisbon and the Tagus on clear days.

Watch for peregrine falcons, Bonelli‘s eagles and, if you‘re lucky, a genet threading between the rocks.

Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, in Leça da Palmeira, was built between 1958 and 1963 on the rocks of the Atlantic coast. It was the very first project of a then young architect named Álvaro Siza Vieira, who would go on to win the Pritzker Prize in 1992.

Listed as a National Monument in 2011, the building has never been altered in its essence: afizélia wood panelling, windows that open entirely to the sea, a roofline that seems to tilt towards the horizon. 🫖

Today it is home to chef Rui Paula‘s two-Michelin-starred restaurant, a kitchen that celebrates the sea with the same intensity the architecture frames it. 🐚
