EVS Vertigem

EVS Vertigem Vertigem has been a sending and hosting organization for young volunteers of European Volunteer Service since 1998. More than 80 hosting projects.

European Voluntary Service is part of Youth in Action Erasmus + Programme run by European Commission. This programme is financed by European Commission and allows young people from 18 to 30 years old to get to know other cultures, live and work as a volunteer in other countries. Vertigem has been involved in EVS since 1998. Vertigem - Associação para a Promoção do Património is a non governmental

organisation for environmental protection. The activities of Vertigem are:
- realization of activities considering the promotion of natural and cultural patrimony
- realization of exchange activities, seminars, conferences and training
- realization of expeditions and guided visits
- edition of pedagogic documents to support outdoor activities
- promotion of rural areas, and sustainable agriculture practices and traditions

The volunteers Vertigem hosts are one of the main reasons for our organization's success. They work on a daily basis at our organization, fulfilling different activities and tasks among our community. All the volunteers have classes of Portuguese several times a week until they can speak our language in a proper way. We also help our volunteers to integrate in the Portuguese society and daily living. Until today Vertigem has hosted young volunteers from: Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brasil, Camboja, Quenia, France, Italy, UK, Hungary, Slovakia,Turkey, Estonia, Latvia, Litvania, Finland, Belarus, Poland, Ukraine, Armenia, Serbia, Austria, Germany and Greece.

I felt that I needed a break from my family, friends. Instead of my regular summer occupation to work in a farm in France, I chose to apply for European Voluntary Service for 1 month in Portugal. I had never traveled abroad alone before, so it seemed to be a bit of a challenge but, in the end, I am proud to have handled it well. I've pushed myself over my limits and now I feel much more self-confident and strong. I have conquered my fear. During my stay in Portugal, I met people, who helped me discover myself and my true aspirations. We spent so much time together and shared so many great moments. Now I am sure about my near future plans. I will continue with biology studies and work to prevent wild animals from being killed. When I reflect back on these days, I realize them to be some of my best. I do not regret coming here and offer everybody, who feels like they need time and place to gather themselves up, to use this opportunity and instead of walking in little steps, for once take a big step and discover a whole new world.

Ceramics lesson. Back-to-school feelings and imagination expressed through line, shape and colour. We are always glad to meet our teachers in their household in an authentic remote Portuguese mountain village. Looking forward to come back next month.

August 1st
This morning, armed with dustbags and nabbers, we headed up to the mountains in the north-western part of Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros to clean up the paths and make records of big garbage dump spots in the area. We want to ensure that everybody can enjoy their stay in the park.
Among other findings: a deep and narrow crevice where, because of an unfortunate twist (details kept secret), we had to perform a teambuilding task. Better be careful and not wonder there at night.

This morning we went to Santa Casa. Laurynas and Paulius had a presentation prepared for the residents. Being the first Lithuanian volunteers in a very long while, we wanted the people to know more about us and compare the differences between Lithuania and Portugal.

At first, I sensed that my life needed a change, a big change. I took the chance and applied for European Voluntary Service for 6 months. I had little idea of how much impact it could have on life and, as my last month here passes, I find myself so different from how I remember myself to be half a year back in France. Before, I would never have travelled alone. It would have been too big a challenge. Now, I understand it as an ultimate test of our lives which forces us out of our comfort zone and teaches us how to make critical decisions and take care of ourselves. I met a lot of cool people from all over the Europe, each of them sharing different interests, ideas and mentality. There would be good times and bad times. One day, I would feel more alive than ever, the other, homesick and lonely. It made me stronger. I learned how much I love animals and nature. Living in a remote mountain village has helped me to find my inner balance. I made new friends, I fell in love with Portugal. Warm and welcoming people, no rush, no stress, living away from the city in your own little bubble. It was a once in a lifetime experience. In the end, I feel no remorse. I am proud of myself for taking this challenge and propose everyone to seize the opportunity to enrich their lives with this kind of experience that no words can define for real.

On 25 April, the "Route of flowers" route was carried out under the Tokandar program in the Natural Park of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros.
Samy, Nicolas, Alice and Adele helped prepare the route and guide the 53 participants over a 15km course. In the end a great lunch with all volunteer staff and friends
