The 3rd of August was all about sei whales, five maybe six individuals all around us. The lighting was just right at certain times to capture a Rainblow!

We were in the midst of a feeding bout, a very big one given the amount of whales, spotted dolphins, and of course Cory’s shearwaters. All our skippers were on point, making sure everyone got awesome views while respecting the animals. Monize’s big smile says it all, a truly wonderful tour.

Rough seas greeted us on the 2nd of August. As our speedboats ripped across the waves so did the spotted dolphins, soaring beside us. A message on the radio, from our “Vigias” gives us a new heading, we are westward bound, on the search for Sei whales.

Blow! Our eagle eye: Carlinhos spots the first whale, from then on we see another and another, joined by spotted dolphins. There is a feeding frenzy to which all benefit, whales, dolphins, and Cory’s shearwaters. A special thanks to our gnarly skippers, Miguel and Alex, always ready for action. And what would a tour be without Raquel’s wonderful smile.

Yesterday 29th of July we had a fabulous morning tour. We kicked off with Sei whales, or possibly Bryde’s, we were unsure since we couldn’t get a good view of the head, and characteristic ridges. Amongst the whales there were Atlantic spotted dolphins, joining the feeding frenzy, just like the fisher men in the background.

The wind picked up and we headed inland where we met more spotted dolphins, socialising and playing. As usual, Cory’s shearwaters made an appearance, showing off their comical take offs. The common dolphins then appeared out of nowhere, and one individual in particular put on a show, leaping repeatedly out of the water, belly up.

As we approached the coast we gave a big hello and thank you to Nicole, our illustrious lookout! Her patience and focus allowed us to see three different species! Of course the tour wouldn’t be anything without our skilful skipper Savi and our lovely guide Flora.

On Thursday 24th July we had yet another spectacular tour, showcasing the abundance and diversity of the waters surrounding the Azores. Our tour kicked off with spotted dolphins, everywhere! Chasing fish at the surface. Then a male s***m whale showed us his impressive fluke, as he dove into the abyss. Left everyone amazed, especially our superb guide Sophie!

Later we sailed alongside Cory shearwaters, masters of the wind. Again we could not escape the curious and exuberant spotted dolphins. And as if that wasn’t enough, a young logger head turtle said hello.

SEI WHALES…not as charismatic as other whales perhaps, often sneaky, sometimes offering only a glimpse into their world. Every now and again we get a mesmerising illustration of their beauty.

First pictures show the instant in which Sei whales emerge, breaking the surface of the water to exhale and refill their enormous lungs. Next photos show the dorsal of the sei whale, big and distinctive, especially next to a spotted dolphin. Finally, a very curious individual with a perfect piercing in its dorsal. Write in the comments if you have any ideas about possible origins of such a scar. Past tagging? Past biopsy? Or if you know this individual!
