Which PR1 hike should you choose in Madeira? Compare Stairway to Heaven, PR1.2 and the full PR1 by route, price and experience. 🥾⛰️

There are several ways to experience the PR1 hiking area in Madeira, and the best option depends on what you actually want to see.

1️⃣ Stairway to Heaven – Pico do Areeiro to Pedra Rija
Choose this if your main goal is to experience the famous Stairway to Heaven in Madeira.
🥾 1.2 km each way
↩️ Return the same way
💶 €4.50 per person

2️⃣ PR1.2 – Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo
Choose PR1.2 if you want the shortest hiking route to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak.
🏔️ Reach Pico Ruivo
↩️ Return to Achada do Teixeira
💶 €4.50 per person

3️⃣ Full PR1 – Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo
Choose the full PR1 Vereda do Areeiro if you want the complete mountain experience: Stairway to Heaven, dramatic scenery and Pico Ruivo in one hike.
➡️ One way after Pedra Rija
📍 Finish at Achada do Teixeira
💶 €10.50 per person

⚠️ Because the full PR1 finishes at Achada do Teixeira, you’ll need to arrange transportation after the hike back to Pico do Areeiro.

Want a shorter alternative to the full PR1?
Do Stairway to Heaven + PR1.2 as two separate hikes. You’ll still experience the famous stairs and reach Madeira’s highest peak, with €9 in total trail fees.

Remember to reserve your required time slot in advance through SIMplifica.

The €10.50 PR1 access fee might look like the main expense, but hiking Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo involves a few more costs - and some very important logistics. 🥾

A guided option costs €62.50 per person, including the PR1 access fee, certified guide, transport from/to Funchal and Caniço, insurance, and SIMplifica slot management.

Quick question we get often: are dogs allowed on Madeira hikes? 🐕

As far as we know, dogs are generally allowed on many hiking trails in Madeira, but not every route is suitable or safe for them.

Some trails have narrow levada paths, steep drops, tunnels, stairs, crowds, or fast-changing weather. Routes like PR1, for example, may not be the best choice for every dog.

Before bringing your dog, always consider the trail difficulty, heat, water, shade, and whether your dog is used to this type of terrain.

They’re the quiet trails, the hidden corners and the moments when it’s just you, nature and the sound of flowing water.
