This is Alvor, a traditional fishing village turned resort that balances a laid-back atmosphere with a wealth of outdoor adventure. Incredible beaches, a lagoon, and a nature reserve, blended with all your typical but not too hectic resort facilities. Which makes this one of the more popular resorts in the Algarve for families.

Yes, there's a small strip of typically touristy bars, and restaurants that fill with holiday makers, but you'll still find some incredible local food, and one of my favourite stretches of the Algarve coastline.

Faro - the capital of the Algarve and the majority of visitor's entry point. Yet, for a lot of Algarve visitors Faro itself is skipped off itineraries. For those that take the time to explore it, you'll find a waterfront city, unique sites and historical architecture, and there's some good local museums too. Not to mention, the Ria Formosa and some incredible beaches right on its doorstep!

Have you taken the time to explore Faro?

Have you heard of Vila Real de Santo António? This is what a historic border town looks like in the Algarve, you’ll find it right where the Guadiana River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Vila Real de Santo António is a small town of just under 20,000 people, but filled with charm. It’s a popular spot for people seeking a more grand, architectural experience in the Algarve. You’ll find a stunning Pombaline-style grid layout, wide open plazas, boutique shopping, and some incredible and fresh Portuguese seafood.

On its northern edge is a nature reserve home to wild flamingos, and a very short trip south is Praia de Santo António, an incredible beach backed by pine forest. It's a great place to really get to know what makes the eastern Algarve so special!

Hiding in the small town of Almancil, near Faro, is Igreja de São Lourenço. An 18th-century Baroque church that is famed for its beutiful azulejo tile chapel.

The tiles tell the story of St. Lawrence and wrap the walls from floor to ceiling. It's a beautiful and almost hidden church that not many visitors stop to explore, but it is well worth it! 💙

There is a small entry fee and it supports the local church.

Praia da Luz is a small resort town in the West Algarve. Family friendly and perfect for people looking for something a little calmer than its neighbour Lagos. This was originally a fishing village, and today its large relatively sheltered bay makes it one of the best beaches in the region for a traditional beach day. Its small but charming palm tree lined promenade also makes for a lovely seaside walk for an ice cream!

For hikers, it also lies right on the Trilho dos Pescadores (Fisherman's Trail) and you can walk along the cliffs to Burgau to the west, or Lagos if you follow it east!

Culatra Island is just a short ferry ride from the mainland near Olhão and it offers one of the most authentic and beautifully preserved glimpses into traditional life in the Algarve. The island is completely car-free, and everything here has to be brought over by boat! As you step off your boat, you're greeted by quiet, sandy paths lined with whitewashed houses and only a handful of small, local restaurants. It feels a little like time travelling, and a glimpse of Portugal from a bygone era.

Follow the boardwalk through the protected dunes and the island opens up to miles of pristine, wild beaches facing the Atlantic. It’s an incredible day trip if you’re in the Olhão or Faro area, and the perfect break from the more typical Algarve people see!

Have you seen these Schweppes signs in the Algarve?

These tiled signs or what’s left of them can be found across the Algarve. Originally they were placed on the walls of cafés, bars and restaurants, and marked a place a traveler could find a drink! Algarve… E Schweppes? Well that literally translates to Algarve and Schweppes. A not so subtle hint that the Algarve and Schweppes go together perfectly. The surviving tiles combine typical Algarve imagery, golden cliffs, almond blossoms, and even architecture, and originally date to between 1956 and 1965.

Although they are getting rarer, they continue to bring smiles and even inspire much more modern murals and other works across the Portugal!

On the western Algarve coast, you'll find a small settlement of typical houses that almost tumble down the cliff towards the beach.

This is Arrifana, a popular spot for surfers, nature seekers, and for people looking to experience a more wild side of the Algarve. It's also a great stopping point to take in the coastline and cliffs for people following the coast from Lisbon to the Algarve or vice versa!
