A tour to the Monastery of Alcobaça, in 1153, ten years after the recognition of Portugal as an independent kingdom, King D. Afonso Henriques
(r. 1139-1185) donated a vast border territory (around 44,000 hectares) to Bernard, abbot of Clairvaux. Founder of this emblematic French abbey and chief promoter of the Cistercian Order throughout, he was a prominent figure from the religious, spiritual, intellectual, and political circle of the time, having been involved in organising the second Christian crusade in Palestine (1147).
The construction of the Abbey of Alcobaça, the third to be founded in Portugal, began in 1178. The place chosen for its implementation - a valley with fertile lands for agriculture, plenty of water (next to the Alcoa and Baça rivers and a drinking water spring), in the vicinity of good limestone quarries and a forest - met the criteria required for the establishment of a Cistercian community.
In 1223, the monks moved to the new building, leaving the old abbey (provisional facilities where they remained while building the definitive monastery), located nearby.
