The Monument to the Discoveries, in Belém, was built to honour the Age of Portuguese Discoveries and the figures who contributed to Portugal’s maritime expansion. The original monument was erected in 1940, and the current stone version was inaugurated in 1960, as part of the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.
Standing at around 52 metres high, it represents a caravel, with Prince Henry the Navigator at the bow, accompanied by other historical figures associated with Portugal’s maritime exploration. Its location beside the Tagus River recalls Lisbon’s role as the starting point for many of the voyages that shaped Portugal’s history.
