25th April 1974
The April revolution or carnation revolution took place on April 25, 1974.
A political and social movement that overthrew the dictatorial regime in force since 1933.
This action was led by the Movement of the Armed Forces (MFA), a military movement composed mainly of captains who participated in the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1975).
This movement started in 1973, initially based on corporate claims.
On April 24, 1974, a group of soldiers, commanded by Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho (2), secretly installed the command post of the coup movement in Lisbon. At 10:55 pm, Paulo de Carvalho's song “E depois do Adeus” is broadcast, a very popular song for having won “Festival da Canção”. At 00h20 the song “Grândola Vila Morena” by Zeca Afonso (3) is transmitted, a song that was prohibited because, according to the government, it alluded to Communism.
The military coup has the collaboration of several military regiments that develop a concerted action, the regime reacts and the Minister of Defense orders that the forces based in Braga advance on Porto, an order not obeyed since they would have already joined the military coup.
Terreiro do Paço (Lisbon) is occupied in the early hours of the morning by the Escola Prática de Cavalaria commanded by captain Salgueiro Maia (4), who later moves part of his forces to the Quartel do Carmo where Marcelo Caetano, head of the government, met.
At the end of the day, Marcelo Caetano surrenders, demanding that power be handed over to General António Spínola, and leaves for Madeira towards exile in Brazil.
With reduced military power and massive support from the population, the reaction of the regime was practically non-existent, registering only 4 dead and 45 injured in Lisbon, affected by the DGS.
Celeste Caeiro (5), started the distribution of red carnations by the citizens, these carnations would be offered to visitors of the restaurant where she worked for the celebration of the 1st year of opening. The citizens offered them to the soldiers and they put them in the barrels of their shotguns, thus becoming the red carnation, the symbol of the revolution.
