Day 11 on the French Coast Path - GR120. From Quend Plage to Noyelles sur Mer on the Baie de Somme. Some walking days are harder than others, but this 3-day weekend was particularly tough. But that feeling at the end of the day 💪🏼 all worth it.

Day 11 French Coastal Path
Quend Plage to Noyelles sur Mer

I wake up and the hotel owner drives me in 3-minutes to the beach of Quend.

I go straight onto the beach 🏖️ and don’t leave it again until after more than 15 km. It is a strange beach. It is 2 hours before low tide, but it is a muddy beach. I sink away everywhere, so I just walk right on the edge of the waterline. The beach is littered with mussels. Besides seaweed and seagrass, it is covered in trash. Plastic, nets, ropes, wood, bottles. Not a nice sight.

I even come across a dead lamb washed ashore 🤢. Meanwhile, tractors are driving back and forth 🚜; in the distance, a car is driving by honking loudly and then shooting birds. A strange experience.

Once the mussel farms stop, the beach is immediately much cleaner. No more trash, but no sea either. The beach is so wide, I can’t see the sea anymore. To my right, I see land with buildings. It is so close that I am completely lost for a moment ⁉️ do I have to go there?

The guidebook said to stay by the dunes. So I dutifully do that, but it seems like you can just cross over.

I just keep walking. There is no end to it, and I have to go all the way around the bay. I am now walking past a sort of swamp of seagrass, samphire, and sea heather. By now, it doesn’t smell very nice anymore. All that brackish, stagnant water 🤢

I pass the lock and now get to trudge through the mud and slush. I navigate through the mud as best I can. Like a real ballerina 🧑‍🩰, I make an impossible move to avoid falling flat on my face in the mud. 😳 almost, anyway.

I am truly hundreds of meters away from the sea and come across a dead seal 🦭 gosh, it really is the day of the odd dead animals 🥺 I trudge on.

Finally, I arrive at Le Crotoy. In the distance, I see St. Valery sur Mer. A 10 km stretch of asphalt is testing my stamina but I have to continue. Finally I reach Noyelles sur Mer.

Day 10 on the French Coast Path, GR 120. From Berck-sur-Mer to Quend Plage. Again a very hot day. Add in sore legs and some frustrating back and forth; this was not my greatest day hiking. But that feeling at the end of it, feeling accomplished 💪🏼

Day 10: French Coastal Path
GR120: Berck-sur-Mer to Quend

It is cloudy. And muggy when I leave Berck-sur-Mer. Within 5 minutes, sweat is dripping from my face. I walk past vegetable gardens, horse pastures, and gravel paths. I can’t see much 🤨 because of the high hedges

I pass a nature reserve and trudge through the loose sand. My legs feel heavy, stiff, and sore. This is going to be a tough day.

I cross a bridge and then take a wrong turn. I realize it after a kilometer or so and walk back 🤪 so that’s 2 km extra. I turn onto a grassy path that immediately feels unpleasant to walk on. It is hot and stuffy, full of flies and mosquitoes.

The path turns into a sunken track, and I see hunters in boots walking calf-deep over the ‘path’. This isn’t going to work. I need to turn around. Again.

So, with an extra 4 km in my legs, I am back where I was an hour ago. Only now I am in a terrible mood 🤨 totally overheated 🥵 and now I have to walk 6 km along a busy road without shade or a bench 🤷🏼‍♀️

I seriously wonder what I am doing and if I actually still enjoy it. Halfway through, I see people in a garden and ask for water. The ladies get me a cold bottle from the fridge and I’m stocked up again 😮‍💨🙏🏼

I walk on and at Fort Mahon plage I get an ice cream and take yet another break.

It’s a bit windy and that’s actually quite nice. The route goes 3km through a dune area but I really can’t handle that right now. I go via the beach. Shorter but not easier because it is high tide and there is only a small strip of churned-up sand left to walk on.

I stop in Quend Plage. I had hoped to get a pizza, but they only do takeaway, and I don’t want that. At the supermarket, I buy a salad and a container of tabouleh 😋 yummy!

My hotel is located 4 km inland, so I stick my thumb up 👍🏼 for a lift, and after a while, someone stops 🙏🏼; within 3 minutes, I am at the hotel. I can check in immediately.

When I tell the man about my walking adventure, he offers to take me back tomorrow morning. This was absolutely not my day, but these kinds of things feel amazing 🫶🏼

Day 9: French Coastal Path
GR120: Étaples to Berck-sur-Mer

After a busy week of work, the alarm goes off at 4:15 am 🫣 I leave at 4:45 am and see the sunrise in the rearview mirror in Belgium. I arrive neatly on time at the station that will be my end point of this 3-day stretch.

After some delay, I take the train to Étaples. Back in April, this is where I finished - so now I can continue 🇫🇷. After a market, 2 croissants 🥐🥐 I walk past an airfield and enter a nature reserve.

At La Tourquet-Paris-Plage I enter the beach and only 15 km later at Berck-sur-Mer I get off the beach again. I stop along the way in Stella Plage and Merlimont. I am longing for some shade 🥵 but it is hard to be found here. Coke Zero goes in, liters of water, an ice cream, more Coke. I make electrolyte drinks and top up my water where possible.

It is almost high tide so it is harder to walk on the beach. I see the beach plover along a large part of the beach. I pass bunkers and 3 km of nudist beach. 👙 I focus on the sand right in front of me and keep a good pace. 🏖️

At Berck-sur-Mer I walk the entire length of the boulevard and then I go into the village. I make a quick stop at Aldi and then check into my senior assistent living complex 😆 I have an apartment here, too bad it is 29 degrees inside 🥵, and no air conditioning.

Pool. Shower. Rest and feet up. I am exhausted. Everything hurts and the blister on my tow hurts too.

Dutch Coastal Path Day 5
Renesse - Ouddorp

A new weekend and another day of walking on the Dutch Coastal Path. I start in Renesse and pick up where I left off last week.

I walk through the woods, past luxury holiday homes and villas 🏡. I reach the beach and walk straight to the waterline 🏖️

It is high tide and walking in the sand is difficult. I sink deep into the sand and leave deep footprints behind. In the distance I see the Brouwersdam, but it takes a while before I get there. I walk a long way along the beach, which is lovely in the early morning, with the sun on my face ☀️ and the waves at my side 🌊

Once on the dam, I have a magnificent view. To the right is the Grevelingenmeer, with the sun on the water and hundreds of boats 🛥️. To the left, the dam and the grey sea with a few waves. Halfway through, I leave Zeeland; I am now in South Holland.

Once on Goeree-Overflakke, the temperature has risen considerably. I am struggling 🥵. Getting up early, driving, warm weather, stomach problems—it’s just not going well today.

The path winds through the dunes and past a few bunkers. Then the path leads back to the Grevelingenmeer for a loop through the Preekhilpolder. It is beautiful here, but sometimes I wish the path was just a bit more efficient (or that I could just deviate from the route, but I almost always dutifully follow the path. FOMO 🤷🏼‍♀️).

After yet another break, the path leads back, across the road, and finally towards Ouddorp. I haven’t really taken a break all day yet, so I’ll just grab a bench. Past detached houses, campsites, and holiday homes. It’s lovely here, you can tell right away! 👍🏼

I turn into an avenue with beautiful shady trees, and that is a real treat. One last wind through a nature reserve with beautiful trees, and then I’m at the windmill in Ouddorp. Next time, I’ll continue from here.

Neeltje Jans - Renesse

After a whole week of work, it’s the weekend and I can head back to Zeeland 🙌🏼. I set off super early again and take the first bus to Neeltje Jans. I get off where I left off last week.

I start walking immediately, across the Oosterscheldekering. There is a pale sun and the water flows through the lock gates, forming unique shapes in the water. It goes a lot easier with fresh legs and I have a good pace.

In Westenschouwen I immediately dive into the forest. The Coast Path winds nicely through the forest. Over hills, through the loose sand, and then back onto the forest path. It is tough walking with the small climbs and the loose sand 🤪.

I leave the forest behind me and walk through the dunes. Here, it is nothing but sand, yellow grass, and a few wild horses 🐴. Walking through the loose sand is incredibly tough, but I enjoy the silence, the peace around me, and my body simply being able to handle this.

Nevertheless, I am relieved to reach a path again. I stroll into Burgh-Haamstede. I shake a kilo of sand out of my shoes and take a short break.

Immediately afterward, I dive back into the woods. Here, I hear rustling in the bushes and see a black doe 🦌. I hear more rustling and see another mother with her fawn. They look at me curiously and then sprint away.

I keep walking. Passing luxury holiday parks and campsites, I eventually reach the dunes and a beach. It is low tide and the beach is gigantic.

I am enjoying a wonderful walk along the beach! It is beautiful. After the beach entrance, there is absolutely no one. And even though I see several beach pavilions further along, I am completely alone here. The hard sand under my shoes, the blue sky, and the grey sea.

At the last beach bar, I take another break to let my shoes dry. I continue to the center of Renesse and to the car.
