I wanted to explore something beyond Coimbra’s usual tourist spots, and the receptionist at my hotel had some excellent suggestions.
•
One of them was Café A Liga — hidden inside one of the University of Coimbra’s original buildings, which today also houses a war veterans association.
•
Part café, part historical building, part quiet reminder of Portugal’s past.
•
Definitely one of the most unexpected places I visited in Coimbra 🇵🇹

My favourite 5
Towns and cities in Portugal 🇵🇹
(excluding Lisbon and Porto - and in no particular order)
•
Coimbra — history, Portugal’s former capital and home to the country’s oldest university.
•
Lamego — a beautiful and peaceful mountain town, known for its pilgrimage church and the 686 steps leading up to it.
•
Viseu — culture, wine, a relaxed atmosphere and surrounded by beautiful nature.
•
Alcobaça — home to one of Portugal’s most beautiful monasteries and the tombs of Pedro and Inês.
•
Sagres — dramatic landscapes and the feeling of standing at the edge of Europe.

Portugal underground 🇵🇹

In Central Portugal, beneath the limestone mountains of Serra de Aire, you’ll find Grutas de Mira de Aire.

The caves were discovered in 1947 and opened to the public in 1974.

One more layer of Portugal.

This is why I came back for the 3rd time.
No photo really captures how huge and quiet this place feels in real life.

Batalha Monastery was build to celebrate Portugal’s victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota, the monastery still feels overwhelming centuries later.
