Hello everyone, Amphibious here.
Today, I’m going to share with you an experience full of excitement, suspense, and challenge 💪.
Before I talk about Tanzania as a country, I’ll start with Kilimanjaro, which is the tallest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing mountain in the world. It’s considered a walkable mountain, meaning you can reach the summit just by walking without needing to use your hands. It stands at a height of 5,895 meters. The mountain has three stages: the first part is made up of trees and forests 🌳, the second part is desert 🏜️, and the third part is ice 🏔️.
The higher you go, the harder it gets, but when you reach the summit, you’ll forget all the exhaustion and feel an incredible sense of achievement 🥳—just like finishing your high school exams.
My trip lasted 5 days: 3 days ascending and 2 days descending. It was tough compared to other programs that take 6 or 7 days, but the more days you take, the more expensive it gets. This is because when you start climbing, you’ll have a guide who walks with you, a cook, an assistant, and a porter who carries your bags and supplies. It’s tough to climb while carrying weight, so these people, who are accustomed to this work, handle it for you.
One of the most important things is to eat fresh food because your body needs energy, and canned food isn’t suitable in these conditions.
You also need to drink a lot of water because it helps maintain your oxygen levels as you ascend and the oxygen levels decrease 😮💨 the higher you go.
There are 5 different routes to reach the summit, each with its own pros and cons. I chose the best, oldest, and easiest route called Marangu, which is known for having huts 🛖 in each camp instead of tents like the other routes.
We started from the gate, and the first thing you need to do is rent the gear you might be missing for the climb, such as poles, a flashlight for the night, and some heavy clothes for the cold ❄️.
We started climbing, and the first advice you’ll hear is “pole pole,” which means “slowly, slowly.” Don’t rush so your body can acclimatize, and drink plenty of water 💧.
The beginning was beautiful because we were walking among trees and forests, hearing distant animal sounds, and passing by waterfalls until we reached the first camp at an elevation of about 2,700 meters around 4 pm. We walked for about 4 hours. I rested for a bit, had lunch, and they checked my oxygen levels to make sure I could continue.
The next morning, we moved to the second camp at an elevation of 3,700 meters, and the path was relatively easy, thank God. This is where we transitioned from the forest to the desert area.
The third day was the toughest. We reached the last camp at an elevation of 4,700 meters, the final camp before the summit. It was around 4 pm, and the guide told me to rest and that we would start moving at midnight. He also advised me to wear heavy clothes because it would get even colder up there 🗻.
We began moving, and I was wearing enough clothes for three people, yet I was still freezing 🥶. When we reached 5,300 meters, I felt exhausted, needing to rest after every 10 steps to catch my breath. There’s something about the altitude that makes it hard to breathe and makes your whole body feel tired.
Finally, we reached an area with a fence, and when I turned around, I saw the sunrise through the clouds ⛅️. I got a sudden surge of energy, knowing I had to reach the summit, which wasn’t far. I ran into someone I had met at the last camp who was on his way down after reaching the summit, which gave me an extra boost of motivation to keep going 💪.
When I reached the summit, I couldn’t believe I had made it after all that exhaustion 🤩. For a moment, I had thought I might not make it.
The cost depends on the number of people and days, but it’s generally between $1,400 to $1,800.
Tips:
• 5 days is short; 6 days is reasonable, and 7 days is comfortable but more expensive.
• One of the great things you’ll experience as you climb is seeing people of all ages and nationalities coming down, encouraging you to keep going.
• Before you decide to go, you need to be comfortable with the idea of climbing a mountain. You don’t need to be 100% athletic, nor can you be too unfit. It’s all about determination, endurance, and remembering that the challenge is more mental than physical.
