This corner of Romania has lived more lives than almost anywhere in Europe. Greek colonists, Romans, Byzantines, Genoese traders and 450 years of Ottoman rule all left something behind. Today Romanians share it with Turks, Tatars, Lipovan Russians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Aromanians and even the descendants of Italian stonecutters in the Măcin villages. You hear it in the languages, see it in the mosques and onion domes, and taste it at every table.

We started on foot in Măcin Mountains, some of the oldest in Europe, worn down to granite teeth and golden grass. Then we swapped boots for bikes around Enisala and Babadag: clifftop singletrack above Lake Razim, the medieval fortress walls, reed beds bending in the wind and sunsets that stopped us every ten minutes.

The wind didn’t take a day off. Neither did we.

Lunch was fresh fish baked in salt in Sarichioi, a Lipovan fishing village, followed by natural w**es at La Sapata. Add a few village cats, thatched roofs with blue trim and tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes, and you’ve got something most people never see.

But this heritage is fragile. The old houses are falling empty, the crafts and recipes live with fewer people every year, and once they’re gone, no museum brings them back. Travelling slowly, sleeping in local guesthouses, eating from local kitchens and buying w**e from small producers is how we help keep it alive. That’s why we keep coming back, and why we bring you with us.

Harvest season is here in Dealu Mare. Big production year, tough market for w**e — but you wouldn’t know it from the ride we had. Long day out: a stop at Licorna WineHouse for the harvest story, a long w**e tasting at Mierla Albă, and a late lunch at Licorna La Vie, right in the vineyard.

Hard year on paper, good year on the bike. 🍇🚴
