The Wooden Church of Urși, among winners of the European Heritage Awards.
Romania has about 1,500 old wooden churches, built before the 20th century. Eight of them, all located in Maramures, are part of the UNESCO Heritage. They are considered as "outstanding examples of vernacular religious wooden architecture resulting from the interchange of Orthodox religious traditions with Gothic influences in a specific vernacular interpretation of timber construction traditions, showing a high level of artistic maturity and craft skills."

These pics were taken more than a month ago on easy trails around Zărnești and Peștera/Măgura. But it's still winter-ish at the foot of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, so you might still get the chance of getting knee-deep in white snow and see such quiet, mysterious landscapes.

Brașov (Noua) – Crucurul Mic – Vama – Brașov (Racadau)
A pleasant, easy going to medium one-day hike starting from the outskirts of Brasov. The whole route reaches Postavaru Peak, but you can break it in at least 2 points to go back to town. The signs are poor in some parts. I bet in a few months it will be greener, so I'll go back! Enjoy!

Stunning views over the Danube, in Almaj Mountains, near Dubova (Mehedinti County). It's only an hour's walk from the village to the ridge of the cliffs, and can be done by anyone.

A great one-day hike near Brasov and close to Bucharest or Ploiesti as well: Grohotis Mountains. Suitable for beginners and advanced mountaineers alike, given the panoramic views it offers. They're very much like Baiului Mountains, but less popular.
