MOSCOW IN BLOOM: 5 PLACES TO WELCOME SPRING IN THE CITY
1. Kolomenskoye Estate is not just a museum, but a massive park. In May, head to the far end of the estate where the ancient royal apple orchards explode into white and pink blossoms. The view of the church tent roofs from under a flowering tree is pure magic.
2. The Novodevichy Convent. Walk around the walls of this UNESCO convent. In spring, the famous pond in front of the fortress is free of ice, reflecting the red-brick towers and the first budding willow trees perfectly.
3. Museon Arts Park (Krymskaya Embankment). This open-air sculpture museum comes alive in spring. The trees around the discarded Soviet statues (from Stalin to Dzerzhinsky) turn green, creating a surreal contrast. Grab a coffee and watch the city stretch.
4. The Boulevard Ring. Walk the entire ring, but focus on Tverskoy Boulevard. In spring, the benches fill up with locals, the chestnut trees bud, and the old lamp posts light up the fresh green at dusk. It is the city's living room waking up from hibernation.
5. Patriarch Ponds. Yes, it's famous from Bulgakov, but in spring it is genuinely lovely. The ice melts, revealing the dark water, and the first sunbathers appear on the benches. It is the best spot to watch the city's social life wake up.
