Catherine Palace "home chapel".
This gorgeous baroque palace Church of the Resurrection of Christ was founded in 1746 by the Russian Empress Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. Completed within 10 years by her favourite architect Francesco Rastrelli, this true gem of the Russian baroque became one of the most beautiful interiors of the Catherine palace. Spacious and full of golden light, embellished with intricate wood carving and 18th century religious paintings, the Church was mostly used by the Imperial family- baptising of children, private services, sometimes weddings.The last Russian Emperor Nicolas II was baptised here.
After the Revolution of 1917 the Palace and its Church became a museum opened for everyone.
During the n**i occupation the Church of Resurrection of Christ was damaged, but not destroyed.
After the restoration works of 2015-2019 opened to the public and along with the Amber room became a must-see for anyone interested in Russian history and culture.

Lutheran Church of the Resurrection of Christ (1860s, till 1931 services conducted in German, Latvian, Estonian, in 1977 restored and given to the Finnish Lutheran community, till 1988 services conducted only in Finnish, up to present - in Russian and Finnish, regularly used for concerts. One of the very few buildings not damaged during the n**i occupation 1941-44)
