"If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."

From Dr. Fred in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

On June 24, I visited Mishaya group for a routine health check. We found the group in the Nyamwirima area of the park, at an altitude of 1904 meters, approximately 1km from the Mburamaizi area where they were ranging yesterday. The group was feeding upon our arrival and was moving downhill towards the ravine in search of food. Some of the gorillas fed in the trees, while other individuals fed on the ground, mostly eating Urera hypselodendron peel and leaves, Triumfetta sp leaves, Basella alba leaves, Mormodica sp, tree ferns, and Mimulopsis solmsii leaves. Vegetation in the ravine was thick and dominated by Triumfetta and Urera. Individuals identified were silverback Mishaya, adult females Mwiza, Bakunzi, and Mize, infants Banshekura and Birungi, and one sub-adult gorilla. Although the group has been ranging close to Kahunge group, there have been no reports of interactions and no injuries were observed in the group. Based on my 2 hour observation, all of the gorillas appeared to be in good health.

Mountain Gorllas' Healthy News in Rwanda.

From Dr. Jean Felix in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: On June 7, I visited Kuryama group for a routine health check. The group was found in the Meteo area of the park, at 2967 meters of altitude. The day was sunny and all gorillas were feeding on carduus and wild celery upon my arrival. Bukima, Haguruka and Impamo spent time hiding in thick vegetation. Jyamubandi and Rwema were playing a lot and joined by Itetero and Igihozo. All 13 gorillas in Kuryama group were visually in good health. I worked with two Fossey Fund Karisoke trackers, training them on filling out the IMPACT sheets. This training will continue for trackers of all habituated gorilla groups. News of Gorillas in Uganda

From Dr. Fred in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda: I visited Nshongi-Bweza group for routine health monitoring on May 30th, 2013. The group was found in the Nyarugaragara area of the park, at an elevation of 2278 meters. When we arrived to the group, the gorillas were feeding in the trees. Later in the observation, some individuals moved to the ground to feed but silverback Bweza remained up in the trees. They were inside the primary forest and were feeding mostly on tree ferns, pith of Mimulopsis arborescens, back/ peel of Urera hypselodendron and leaves of Ipomea sp. There have been no reports of interactions with other groups. Adult female Munini had a fresh superficial wound on the brow of her right eye that should heal fine on it’s own. All group members were observed and were visually in good health.
