**Who they are** Gentle giants. Live in families of 8-20. Very calm, sit together Super active, loud, and playful. Live in big communities of 40-100
**Vibe** Peaceful, emotional, "magical" moment. You sit and watch them for 1 hour Energetic, noisy, full of drama. Lots of swinging, grooming, hooting
**What you’ll see** Gorillas feeding, playing, babies climbing on mum. Very close up Chimps chasing each other, making tools, calling to each other

*2. THE TREK ITSELF*

**GORILLA TRACKING** **CHIMPANZEE TRACKING**
**Where in Uganda** **Bwindi Impenetrable Forest** or **Mgahinga NP** - southwest Uganda **Kibale Forest NP** - best in Africa. Also **Budongo in Murchison**
**Hike difficulty** Moderate to Strenuous. Bwindi is hilly, muddy, thick forest. 1-6 hours Moderate. Kibale is flatter forest. Usually 1-3 hours
**Terrain** Steep slopes, thick vegetation. Walking sticks provided Easier trails, but can be muddy in rainy season
**Altitude** Higher up: 1,400m - 2,600m. Can feel cooler Lower: ~1,500m. Warmer and more humid

*3. RULES & LOGISTICS*

**GORILLA TRACKING** **CHIMPANZEE TRACKING**
**Minimum Age** **15 years old** **12 years old**
**Group Time** 1 hour with the gorillas once found 1 hour with the chimps once found
**Group Size** Max 8 people per gorilla family Max 6 people per chimp group
**Best time** Year-round. Easier in dry seasons but ok in March/April too Year-round. Chimps easier to find in dry season
**Noise level** Must whisper. No sudden movements You can be a bit louder, but still respectful

*4. WHICH ONE FOR KIDS?*
Right now with ages 3 & 6: *neither yet* because of age limits.
But for the future:
- *Choose Gorilla* if you want a once-in-a-lifetime, emotional, quiet encounter. "The highlight of Africa"
- *Choose Chimps* if you want action, noise, and to see primates being playful and naughty 😂 Kids who love monkeys usually prefer chimps.

While the kids are little, you can still do *Chimp Habituation Experience* or just visit *chimps in the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe* to get them excited for later!

5 Photographer Mistakes to Avoid on Your Uganda & Rwanda Gorilla Tour 📸🦍
With tips from Roads of Adventure Safaris

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime shoot. But excitement makes many photographers miss the shot. Avoid these:

1. Forgetting low-light gear
Bwindi and Volcanoes are dense, misty rainforests. Most treks happen under a dark canopy.
Fix: Bring a fast lens f/2.8 or faster + high ISO body. No flash allowed — it disturbs gorillas. Your Roads of Adventure Safaris guide will remind you before the trek.

2. Packing too much gear
That 400mm + tripod sounds great… until you’re climbing muddy slopes at 2,500m.
Fix: Go light: 1 body, 24-105mm + 70-200mm. Our porters can help carry, but you’ll move faster with less.

3. Not checking permit rules + timing
You only get 1 hour with the gorilla family. Permits are non-refundable and limited.
Fix: Book 6-9 months early with Roads of Adventure Safaris. We secure permits + build buffer days for weather delays.

4. Ignoring rain + mud protection
February is wet season in parts of Uganda/Rwanda. Cameras + humidity = disaster.
Fix: Dry bags, rain covers, and silica gel. We provide waterproof duffels on all our gorilla safaris.

5. Shooting, not seeing
It’s easy to stare through the lens and miss the moment a silverback looks at you.
Fix: Put the camera down for 2 minutes. Roads of Adventure Safaris guides will cue you: “Watch now, shoot next.” The memory matters too.

⛰️ Throwback Tuesday: At the Foot of the “Mountains of the Moon”

Taking it back to an unforgettable moment at Rwenzori Mountains National Park Gate, the gateway to one of Africa’s most mystical and challenging mountain ranges.

Standing at the trailhead during our Roads of Adventure Safaris FAM trip was a reminder that every great adventure begins with a single step. Even without reaching Margherita Peak, being surrounded by giant lobelia, bamboo forest, and misty valleys — with the snow-capped Rwenzori rising above at 5,109m — was truly inspiring.

They call it the Mountains of the Moon, and you feel why the moment you step in.

The Canopy Walk in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda, is a thrilling 160-metre-long suspension bridge hanging 70 metres above an ancient rainforest valley. Starting from the Uwinka Visitor Centre, the entire guided experience takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete, combining a lush forest trek with stunning panoramic treetop views.
