Bears in the mist.

A recent morning at Brown Bear Bay Lodge & Suites, watching bears meander through the low tide as mist lifted around us.

Not another soul was around. Just us. The bears. The sounds of light waves lapping the shores. That’s the power of being at this place. Unfettered access to bears. None of the crowds.

Snaps from the Mount Zirkel Wilderness in North-Central Colorado. Truly a beautiful region of the state, yet tucked away from most of the crowds in the grand scheme of outdoor recreation.

A treat to get to spend a night out here and soak up the views, go swimming, and camp under the stars (and with no rain fly!)

Zirkel Circle - 12 mile loop - 2,500 feet of gain - 60 mins from Steamboat Springs

The eagles of Homer, Alaska! It's been five years since I've visited homer and it felt so great to get back to this beautiful town.

We had wonky weather which kept us from flying, so our group spent it at Anchor Point watching adult and juvenile bald eagles fly around, eat fish, and stare at each other.

Our final day backpacking in Maroon Bells. (See an earlier post for day 1) After going to bed at 1030pm, we woke up just after 4am, packed up, and headed towards Buckskin Pass. We were sore and tired but made it up just before the peaks turned a golden hue.

It was incredibly beautiful and a perfect cap to the trip! A big shout out to Myranda Hausheer | Denver, Colorado | hiking | outdoors and Brian Lynch for joining in the fun!

Final trail stats: ~ 20 miles & 5,500 feet of gain including two passes of 12,500.

If you want more images or details for this trail, I have a recent article on my website. And if you see an image you want to purchase, just let me know!

🎫 Remember, visiting Maroon Bells is highly permitted and private cars cannot drive to the trailhead unless you have a parking reservation.

🚍Take the shuttle and book in advance

My first trip into the Maroon Bells! What a gem of a place and a tough one too.

Started my day arriving at the Aspen highlands garage at 7:15 am where I paid far too much to park, before boarding the 7:30 shuttle.

Around 8:15, we began the march to Buckskin pass (~ 5miles and 3k vert) with magical flowers and stunning views.

From buckskin pass we hiked (down, thankfully) another 1.5 miles to our sweet campsite and proceeded to get hailed/rained on for 2 hours (thankfully post-tent set up).

Then we headed out again for another 6 miles RT (~1,500 gain) to snowmass lake and above to check out the views. Around 7:30pm, it started to rain and for the next two hours we were on a death march back to camp: wet, hungry, cranky, and tired.

Hot meals ensued before heading to bed. Very tired. But thoroughly stoked on life that we could see a beautiful place that so few get to see.

Stay tuned for tomorrow and follow Alec Sills-Trausch | Adventure & Travel to make sure you see it!
