The marking on the ground indicates where Bi'r al-Arees (بئر الأريس) was. Our Beloved ﷺ drank from this well's water and performed wudhu with it. The well is only a few meters away from Masjid Quba.
The Prophet ﷺ once sat by this well with his shins uncovered and his legs dangling into the well. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (ra) stood at the door of the well as a gatekeeper. Abu Bakr (ra) came and asked permission to enter so the Prophet ﷺ told Abu Musa (ra): "Grant him permission and give him glad tidings of paradise." Abu Bakr came in and sat to the right of the Prophet ﷺ and dangled his feet into the well. Then, Umar (ra) came and sought permission. He was told the same, "Grant him permission and give him tidings of paradise." Umar (ra) came in and sat by the left of the Prophet ﷺ and dangled his feet into the well. Then, Uthman (ra) came and sought permission. He was told, "Grant him permission and give him glad tidings of paradise along with tribulations he will be afflicted with." Uthman (ra) came in and sat on the other side of the well in front of them. (Full narration in Sahih Muslim)
This well is also known as Bi'r al-Khatam (بئر الخاتم) because the ring of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell in it at the time of the caliph, Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (ra). It is narrated by Anas (ra): "The ring of the Prophet ﷺ was in his (ﷺ) hand, and after him, in Abu Bakr's hand, and then in Umar's hand after Abu Bakr. When Uthman was the caliph, he was once sitting at the well of Arees. He removed the ring from his hand and while he was trifling with it, dropped into the well. We kept on going to the well with Uthman for three days looking for the ring, and finally the well was drained, but the ring was not found." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
A number of scholars like Hafiz ibn Hajr al-Asqalani and Allamah al-Samhudi have written that trials and tribulations began facing the ummah after the ring fell into the well.
May Allah ﷻ allow us to be with our Beloved ﷺ and the companions (ra) in paradise.
