Stories behind the scenes...
📍 Naqa, North Sudan
In these times we’re in it’s difficult to find the motivation to carry on, to see things clearly like if all the doors were closed. Something we learn along the way in life is to chose. The choices we make in life define us, the attitude which we face our problems define us and the way we treat each other define us. This project started as a way to know my roots and the culture that revolves around it. Past and present time. I refused to see the social reality and history the way I was told by the media, institutions or companies because every individual has its own perception. While travelling around this lands of pharaohs and empires I realised that each person defines the history based on a consensus. A consensus that usually matches his/her identity and that’s how groups of individuals decide to imagine or write the history and sociology from a period of time and how it may have been. The reality is that we don’t know for sure. The more you travel the more you realise how subjective is the main narrative and how many stories haven’t been told, yet we believe we know everything.

🇬🇧EN:
Naqa is one of the largest ruined sites in Sudan. An important ancient city once stood in the location. It was one of the centers of the Kingdom of Meroë, which served as a bridge between the Mediterranean world and Africa. The site has two notable temples, one devoted to Amun and the other to Apedemak which also has a Roman kiosk nearby. With Meroë and Musawwarat es-Sufra it is known as the Island of Meroe, and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

Trying to navigate through strong currents... 🚣‍♀️

Year 2020 was such a challenge. Not only for the travellers but for everyone in general. It’s not easy to stay away from the ones you love, specially in moments were you are supposed to be united. Even though, in the darkest moments one can appreciate the light better. For this 2021 we still have hope, we still bond together and we strive for the better times to come as we learn a big lesson of a lifetime and adapt to over come it.
✨ WE WISH YOU A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021 ✨

This is the cow market in Elobeid. The traders from all over Sudan come here to sell their cattle and make a living. Depending on the region, the cows have different horns. For example, South Sudan’s cow has thiner and slightly curved horns while West Sudan’s cows are thicker and curlier. In this photo you can appreciate that difference. Who is who 🧐? Can you tell the difference?

Typical Sudanese pottery at the market in El Obeid 🇸🇩
Something you will realize if you walk the streets of any village or city in Sudan is that there’s pottery placed in the public spaces full of water. Because of the hot weather this serves the purpose of providing a cup of fresh water to anyone who needs it. It is amazing to see how cool it can be (Even though, in these times we would not recommend to drink from it). The clay can maintain the water protected from the heat for long periods of time while preventing bacteria being formed inside.

The market of El Obeid 🇸🇩
Walking around the market of El Obeid was much different from the markets of Khartoum or Omdurman. First of all, you find elements that are particular from the western region of Sudan (like woodworks, clothing, pottery...). Secondly, the fruits. Yes, the west is known for having the best fruits of all kinds! You can smell the stands from meters away 🍊 🍇 🍌
Is amazing to see how much you can learn from a country by visiting its markets.

Day 17. The last phase of the trip. Western Sudan 🇸🇩 In the expeditions it is important to always pay attention to the museums, history and culture to see beyond the eurocentrism that leads in this globalised world. See the different histories and get to your own conclusions.
One of the first steps when we arrived to El Obeid was stopping by the museum of the city. What do we see here? “The Battle of El Obeid” fought between Anglo-Egyptian forces under the command of Hicks Pasha and forces of Mohammed Ahmed, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, on a plain near the town of El Obeid on November 3–5, 1883.
The museum hosts old weapons, pottery, armour, swords, old photos of leaders and many many more interesting items.

While you travel around Sudan you can find a beautiful diversity of peoples. From the Westerners with its own phenotype to the Nubians and many more that we’ve been commenting during the documentation of this trip. With the Rashaida peoples is specially complicated to make a contact (specially in Sudan) where they have no much understand of what the concept of tourism is about and also because they are nomads, rejecting the sedentary way of life. The moment the season of rain comes they change their camp settlement. Important to mention that their way of life has nothing to do with resources, actually they are pretty wealthy driving the latest car models and covering their woman with gold. It’s a matter of values. Thankfully, we could manage to do a meet up and know in depth were they live, see their camps and enjoy their particular culture. You can find them in the outskirts of Port Sudan and Kassala, where they literally own one of the most important markets of the town. It was such an amazing experience which I couldn’t fully photograph because of the reason above mentioned. Luckily, at the end some young Rashaidas were curious and let us take some pictures from the mosque and themselves.

Our Team leader couldn’t resist the temptation of riding a camel. And he did manage pretty well! We brought the attention of all the Bejas around who later on explained us how the market was working. They had no problem at all and they were very welcoming to show us their day today, language and culture. The elders were always the ones who had more to say. Somehow for the team is a good way to reconnect with a reality that looks far from these times but coexist with and it’s being lost with the advancement of globalisation. Still one can perceive the purity in the ways of the peoples that roam far away from main cities. The essential is invisible to the eyes.

Around the Kassala’s camel market the Beja show off their cattle. Through many demonstrations it is decided which are the best camels and the ones that have potential for racing, establishing a price according to these factors that can reach really high amounts.
Around the area there’s also a compound of huts where people can have a tea, eat some food and see other types of cattle for sale like sheeps or lambs.
