Heart of Lapland Discover the hidden river valleys of the north
📍Pajala, ÖvertorneĂ„, Haparanda
📍 Kalix, Överkalix In Swedish Lapland you will find unique arctic experiences.

Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, here high up by the Arctic Circle, you can experience seasons with great contrasts between polar nights with sparkling northern lights in a white winter landscape and warm summers filled with swimming and hundred days without night under the midnight sun. In the east – a 300-km coastal stretch facing the world’s largest brackish water archipelago, with thousands of

islands. Sandy beaches, fishing camps and unique produce. In the west – vast mountains, brooks with water so clean you can drink from them and lots of adventures around the corner. In between the quiet, enigmatic, open-handed forest and river valleys from Skellefte River in the south to Torne River in the north-east, all with their unique distinctive characteristics to offer. Traditions and cultures are strong here,
and love of nature is even stronger. This is our everyday-life, and we invite you to share it with us.

MeÀnkieli PÀivÀ - The day of meÀnkieli

On February 27th, we celebrate ‘MeĂ€nkielipĂ€ivÀ’, honoring the MeĂ€nkieli language.

MeÀnkieli is the language of the Tornedalian, Kven, and Lantalais people. (Same minority - different names.)

This date marks a pivotal moment in 1988, when people from the national minority called ‘Tornedalians’ gathered in Pajala to declare the languague independent - an act of cultural resilience.

MeÀnkieli is the language of the Tornedalian, Kven, and Lantalais people.

In 2000, the Swedish state officially recognized MeĂ€nkieli as one of Sweden’s five national minority languages.

Many Tornedalians, Kvens, and Lantalais-people lost their language due to forced assimilation policies.
That’s why MeĂ€nkielidagen is important. It’s not just about language, it’s about reclaiming culture, identity and honoring heritage.

Today, we celebrate those who keep the language alive and continue to embrace it as a vital part of the cultural identity. đŸ’›đŸ€đŸ’™

Humans of Heart of Lapland - met Anna-Lena Kaati.

Visiting is a truly genuine experience.
With warmth and heart, she shares her life as a Sámi. You will learn about Sámi culture, her reindeer, and the reindeer’s important role within Sámi culture.

Recently, moose have also moved to Anna-Lena’s place - north of Överkalix. You can now experience both reindeer and moose — two of the North’s most iconic animals — pet them, feed them, and learn more about them.

It is an experience built on respect, presence, and genuine connection — a moment that stays with you long after you leave.

Anna-Lena wants everyone to understand how incredible reindeer are — each one has its own personality, its own way of being.

“They deserve our respect and care. I also believe that encountering animals awakens something within us — a deeper understanding and perhaps even more empathy,” says Anna-Lena.

Nestled in the village of LiehittĂ€jĂ€, the family-run offers guests a glimpse into the SĂĄmi way of life — rooted in tradition, sustainability, and deep respect for nature.

The Huuva family shares culture through immersive, hands-on experiences where food, craft, and storytelling are shaped by the Arctic landscape and its rhythms.

Get hands-on with Sámi-inspired craft and food traditions. Carve and whittle wood using simple tools, then bake your own gahkku — a soft flatbread rooted in Arctic food culture. The experience ends with a Sámi-style tapas tasting of smoked, cured, and dried meats and fish, local cheeses, and carefully selected beverages.

As evening falls, settle into a 5-course Sámi and Arctic tasting dinner. Each dish is paired with local drinks and stories of Sámi culture, food heritage, and life in the North — a rich journey through flavour, tradition, and culture.

In summertime, you can experience a guided nature walk where you taste what the wild has to offer: handcrafted mocktails, forest snacks, and a thoughtfully prepared 3-course meal made from local ingredients. Along the way, stories of Sámi culture, food heritage, and nature’s rhythms are brought to life — creating an experience for all senses.

Discover Mukka, a family business founded by Ida BrÀnnström and Simon Mukkavaara, both raised in the Torne Valley, rooted in love for this place and its people.

Mukka is a collection of places and experiences shaped by nature, culture and togetherness, unfolding at a slower pace:

, the village living room in ÖvertorneĂ„ – a warm and welcoming meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Here, people come together around workshops, pop-up events and shared moments, accompanied by good food and drinks.
In their workshops, Mukka works with wood and reindeer antlers, and through hands-on creating and storytelling around Tornedalian culture and history. Just above Mukka Matarengi, they offer short-term rental apartments.

is a villa available for rent, nestled on a mountain by the Torne River – a secluded place where you can land, breathe and be in your own little bubble, surrounded by the calm and vastness of nature, combined with gentle activities on and around the mountain.

– a summer hideaway by the Torne River. Here, water, light and the rhythm of nature take center stage – a place for slow days, sauna, fire, dips in the river, wake up to a magical morning view, and stillness close to nature.

Winter at Mukka invites you into low-key experiences focused on presence rather than performance. Mukka offer reindeer visits with Snöboll and friends, where they share stories about Tornedalian culture, Tornedalian reindeer herding and life near the Arctic Circle.
They also offer snowshoe experiences with an inward focus – slow-paced journeys shaped by intentional pauses for reflection. And dinner outdoors, overlooking the river and the border to Finland, cooked over an open fire and surrounded by nature on the mountain.

Next winter 2026/2027, Mukka will offer package trips that include both accommodation and activities. The next Mukka project and location will launch soon, adding new accommodation.

Mukka is not meant to be big or fast – but genuine, human and close.

Hot water meets Arctic air.

When the water is hot,
the molecules move fast.
It is almost ready to become v***r.

Thrown into the cold,
it breaks into tiny droplets.

The freezing air cools
the droplets in an instant.

The cold and dry air can’t hold the moisture,
so the water condenses, forming a cloud.
