Tama Koganei Sakura Stroll (Free Walking Tour)

For my first tour and first free walking tour in Japan, participants joined me in a 3-hour stroll from Tama Station on the Seibu-Tamagawa line to Musashi-Koganei Station on the JR Chuo line.

Koganei city has been named one of the famous Sakura places for the 100th year. Not only did participants learn about and witness the different varieties of cherry blossoms, they also were introduced to the history of Musashi province and the origin of the name of Koganei city and Hake-no-michi.

In the middle of the tour, we also enjoyed a short hanami or 'cherry blossom viewing' under the cherry trees and had some snacks.

Overall, the participants enjoyed themselves very much and the scenery was amazingly beautiful.

Participant Feedback:

"We were able to enjoy beautiful scenery as we moved between locations, seeing various cherry blossoms, plants, and nature. Also, the guide checked the weather forecast beforehand and, seeing that it was going to rain on the originally scheduled tour day, moved the tour forward to a sunny day. I felt the guide's thoughtful consideration and desire for the participants to enjoy the tour."

"I am truly impressed by the guide's extensive knowledge. It was a very enjoyable and fulfilling tour, and I learned so much. Thank you so much."

27-28 March

I had the honour of hosting two American doctors on their first trip to Singapore for the past two days. They are well seasoned travellers who have been to over 120 countries and they wanted a more local and unique experience away from touristy attractions. As such, I put together an experience that includes a visit to Jiak99, National Gallery, Kusu Island, Hell's Museum and ended it off with a special Forest Bathing experience at Telok Blangah Hill Park, conducted by a forest therapy guru. They had a good time and are planning another trip here next year.

Lim's Tours X JAS presents
"Walk, Learn, Capture: Keppel Bay History and Landscape Workshop"

In the 19th instalment of the Singapore Lecture and Tour series, I brought the 8 participants to Singapore's New Harbour, which was later known as Keppel Harbour.

We revisited the 2nd largest dry dock in the world, the King's Dock and learnt about its role in Keppel Harbour. Participants also got to learn about the No.1 Dock, No.2 Dock and the Queen's Dock and see how it has integrated with the condominiums now. Also, everyone was surprised to know of the origins of the name of the Reflections condominium.

A special feature of this experience was also to learn some basics of photography. Participants were introduced to techniques such as types of camera angles, rule of thirds, warm and cool colours, leading lines etc. During the tour, participants got to experience taking different types of photos, applying what they have learnt, and thereafter prizes were given to the person with the best photo in each of the named categories.

We also climbed Fort Pasir Panjang and learnt about the battle of Singapore during WWII. The tour ended with a highlight of a panoramic view on top of Labrador Tower. Everyone had a good time.

Syonan Sacred Sites Tour

With a group of 7 participants, we embarked on a journey to the two sacred sites that the Japanese has built in Singapore during WWII. Singapore was then named Syonan-to, which means 'Light of the South Island'. These sites include the Syonan Shrine, known as the second largest after the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, and the Syonan Chureito Memorial, constructed for the fallen soldiers in the war. None of the sites remained in its original glory, as the Japanese soldiers destroyed them to prevent them being desecrated by the Allied forces at the end of WWII. We hiked through the MacRitchie reservoir to the point closest to Syonan Shrine and I shared the story around the building of the shrine. On the way, we encountered many wildlife, including otters, macaques, and a Komodo dragon. Then at Syonan Chureito Memorial, we climbed the steps and reimagined how it was like in the past, through stories and pictures. It was an educational journey about the past.

Lim's Tours X JAS: Discovering Local Culture through Cuisine: A Food Tour of Singapore

At JIAK99, we experienced Singapore's past through exhibits like a mama shop (a general store run by an Indian man). We also experienced ethnic cultures through zones showcasing Eurasian, Malay, Indian, and Chinese cuisine. During an introduction to Indian culture, participants had the opportunity to make fragrant flower garlands.

JIAK99 created a special rangoli with Mt. Fuji and cherry blossom designs as a gift for the Japanese Association's visit. Everyone was delighted. After the tour, the participants sampled Singaporean cuisine in tingkats, including curry puffs, kaya bread, sugared roti prata, nasi lemak with otak, and peranakan kueh.

Six participants also participated in the ondeh-ondeh making experience with Chef Robin at JIAK99. Afterwards, everyone tried making rangoli and created sand art. It was a very enjoyable tour.

Jan 4, 2026 Ethnobotany Garden Tour

Happy new year everyone!
Today is our first tour of the year! We visited the Ethnobotany Garden in the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Ethnobotanical gardens are specialized gardens that showcase plants and their traditional uses by indigenous cultures, focusing on how people have historically used plants for food, medicine, crafts, building materials, and cultural/spiritual purposes.

The guests had surprising finds, for instance they saw the cassowary plum for the first time, gasping at the blue tint of the fruit and the vegetable smell of it. They also came face to face with a mini Komodo dragon.

The tour ended with the Singapore desserts exhibition at the Ethnobotany Garden Centre. The guests couldn't help but point out all the desserts they love. It was a fun and informative 3 hours.
