Everyone knows Niseko in winter. Rather fewer know it’s where Japanese people go to escape their own summer.

Tokyo in August sits around 35 degrees and something close to full humidity. Niseko is low twenties, dry, and green in a way the photographs never quite manage.

Gan went in July — rafting the Shiribetsu, Kotobuki Onsen where the water comes off Yotei, and a mountain that in winter would have a queue on it. The rest of his list is on WanderLuxe. We’d start with the onsen.

Summer in Hokkaido takes Rhyle to Rusutsu Resort Amusement Park — open only during the warmer months, though come winter, you can actually ski right through it.

Seminyak and Jimbaran both face west, so they get the same sunset at the same minute. What happens either side of it is where they part company.

Seminyak is a surf beach that becomes a beach club — the day starts late and ends later. Jimbaran is a bay, which means flat water, boats coming in at dawn, and tables carried out onto the sand at dusk for fish that was in the water that morning. It’s also about ten minutes from the airport, which nobody mentions until their last night.
