Vipava Valley e-bike rides

Very pleasant Sunday weather, so time for a bike ride. Strava did not work, but it was about 2.5 hours and 32 kilometres. I wanted to checkout work progress on the little bridge at Batuje, so I decided to photograph all the bridges over the Vipava river within 15km or so, in both directions from my house. It is a relatively easy, flat ride, but I would seriously warn people to not follow the signposts after the new pedestrian bridge near Saksid. The only option is to go back to Saksid after viewing the bridge, as the rough footpath through to Batuje was never easy and is now blocked off at the Batuje bridge, and there is a no through road sign on the track towards Steske (but there is also a house with a loose Rottweiler, which is a bit scary). Hopefully, the bridge works at Batuje might include improving the track from the pedestrian bridge.

So finally the temperatures in the mid-thirties have passed, bringing rain and clearing the air. Mid-twenties is great for bike rides, and today was dry and sunny. It has been a while, so I did not attempt a long ride, but my easy 'warm-up' but in reverse. However, once in the saddle, I extended the usual route to explore a track near Dobravlje that I have never tried. Bumpy & Long - Stanjel, Kras & Vipava valley. Probably my longest ride yet, but avoiding hard climbs except at the start, up to the Kras, and little exploration of new tracks - though simply going in the opposite direction along familiar tracks provides a little novelty. Kras is beautiful (lots of amazing butterflies) but rocky, but that long in the saddle is hard for my bum!

Nice weather, but it was getting a bit late for anything ambitious, so I thought I would explore a few nearby tracks as yet unknown to me. Although, from experience, I am given to warn folk not to trust Google Maps, this time I thought I would risk it. There's a thing about being 'off the beaten track' - that it's not (literally) 'beaten', and you run the risk of picking up large twigs which can get tangled up in your chain and exposed gearing. It has happened before on rough trails, but this time the twig was too tough to break and instead bent and twisted my rear derailleur hanger into my back wheel. Jammed up solid, so i had to take the rear wheel off, removed the twisted hanger and chain, and put the wheel back so I could at least push the bike. Thankfully, I was only a few hundred metres from quite a busy road, and my kind neighbour came to get me with a car big enough to throw the bike in the back. But it made me realise that I am often in much less accessible places, and at times when there would be nobody around to pick me up, however the chances must be small as I have ridden rougher and more out of the way trails quite a lot in my explorations and this is the first time it has happened. I have to say that it was always in the back of my mind that having your drive train and gearbox open to the elements and positioned so close to the ground always made me a little uncomfortable. I will be working on better emergency plans whilst the shop repairs my bike, bearing in mind that buying a Land Rover or Ford Ranger is out of the question😏

Taking advantage of the fine weather - temperatures in the high 20s - I decided to test the limit of my saddle soreness with a 40+ kilometre ride, without tricky climbs or gravelly descents. Not having much cause to use full power, I used less than the 1% per kilometre of battery, which seems to be the average.

Summer starts here when "it's warmer outside than inside", quoth La Tanja. perfect day for bike riding - no more excuses. About time I used the new tyres, chain and gear cassette. Had to get f**s at the petrol station in Dornberk anyway. Recent rain means planning a trip away from muddy, shaded tracks, so I cautiously just extended the basic 'warm-up' run along the valley. Still, about 20km and my arse starts to complain! I've posted this in the Vipava Vipava Valley e-bike rides page as well.

Birthday ride (in at the deep end). Straight into steep climbs, and then quite challenging tracks, until you descend to the Vipava river and follow it home (flat and fast, and safe gravel). Not so long, but nevertheless rewarding. Details in info tab of photos -
