Happy Svalbard Day! Svalbard became part of the Kingdom of Norway when the Svalbard Act entered into force on 14 August 1925. Since then, Svalbard, whose area is roughly equivalent to that of mainland Norway south of Dovre, has been part of what is described in Article 1 of the Norwegian Constitution as a "free, independent, indivisible, and inalienable kingdom."🐻‍❄️🇳🇴

Meet one of Svalbard’s Arctic giants. 🦭

Walruses can be found throughout the year in Svalbard’s waters, resting on sea ice or gathering in colonies along remote coastlines. These social animals are famous for their impressive tusks, sensitive whiskers, and their surprisingly strong preference for lounging together in large groups.

Despite their relaxed appearance, walruses are wild animals that can be easily disturbed. That's why wildlife encounters in Svalbard should always happen responsibly and from a respectful distance.

Meet one of Svalbard’s most charming summer visitors: the Atlantic Puffin!

With its brightly coloured beak and expressive face, it’s easy to see why the puffin is often called the “clown of the sea.” But there’s much more to this charismatic seabird than its looks.

Puffins are remarkable divers, capable of plunging up to 60 metres below the surface in search of fish. Underwater, they use their wings to propel themselves through the water, almost as if they’re flying beneath the waves.

They’re also known for their loyalty. Puffins often return to the same nesting sites year after year, reuniting with the same mate each breeding season.

📍 If you're visiting Svalbard during summer, keep an eye on the coastline for a chance to spot one of the Arctic’s most iconic birds in its natural habitat.

For a few days each summer, nature puts on one of its most dramatic shows in Trygghamna!
Every summer, guillemot chicks leave their safe nests by jumping from the high cliffs of the mountain Alkehornet aiming for the ocean below - often hundreds of chicks at the same time. 🐣
Guided by their parents call at sea, this risky first flight marks the beginning of their life - while predators eagerly lingers nearby, making it a true Arctic survival moment.
